Unemployment Hysteresis in the Czech Republic

Abstract: This paper analyses the unemployment hysteresis in the Czech Republic on data from 1999 to 2016. The hysteresis is modelled by allowing for the impact of cyclical unemployment on the nonaccelerating inflation rate of unemployment. Models are estimated using the Bayesian approach and provide robust evidence in favour of the hysteresis. The estimates imply that in response to an increase in the cyclical unemployment of 1 percentage point, the non-accelerating inflation rate of unemployment increases by 0.18 perc… Show more

“…They rejected the unit root hypothesis after controlling for structural changes and business cycle effects in the case of CEE countries. Similar findings have been obtained by Bechný (2019) and Furuoka (2014) for CzechR. In addition, our findings concur with Gozgor (2013) results in the case of 10 CEE countries.…”

“…In the similar context, NRU transformed into the NAIRU to explain the cyclical component of the aggregate unemployment rate in which the latter hypothesis implies that aggregate demand and monetary policy shocks can induce a change of unemployment from the NAIRU in the short-run (Bechny, 2019). However, as in the case of NRU, the NAIRU hypothesis points out that it converges to the optimal level in the long-run, which is substantially independent of the effects of monetary policies and structural components of the aggregate economy.…”

“…V české odborné literatuře se empirickou verifi kací hypotézy hystereze zabýval Bechný (2019b), Němec (2010) či Pošta (2015), přičemž závěry všech zmíněných autorů podporují hypotézu hystereze. Bechný (2019b) konkrétně aplikoval metodologii nepozorovatelných komponent (UC, Unobserved Component), kterou navrhli Jaeger a Parkinson (1994).…”

Bechný (2019b) konkrétně aplikoval metodologii nepozorovatelných komponent (UC, Unobserved Component), kterou navrhli Jaeger a Parkinson (1994). Po jejich vzoru modeluje hysterezi jako situaci, ve které cyklická složka ekonomické veličiny ovlivňuje její trendovou složku, což je přístup, který bude použit také v tomto článku.…”
