Unemployment and work disability in individuals with chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis: a community-based cross-sectional study from Spain

Abstract: Background Few reports have examined the association between unemployment and work disability in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME). This study explored the key determinants of work disability in a CFS/ME cohort. Methods A community-based prospective study included 1086 CFS/ME patients aged 18–65 years. Demographic and clinical characteristics and outcome measures were recorded. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to identify key r… Show more

“…The sample of ME/CFS patients in this study reflected the sociodemographic distribution of patients observed in previous cross-sectional studies (7,9,(46)(47)(48)(49)(50). The majority of the study participants were female, of normal weight, and unemployed, which is consistent with the current literature (7,9,(46)(47)(48)(49)(50). In congruence with other studies, the mean age of the study participants fell between 40 and 50 years, where the mean age of onset was similarly within…”

“…CFS/ME is known to be associated with poor health-related quality of life, worse than cancer, multiple sclerosis and stroke [3]. In fact, approximately 25 to 29% of CFS/ME patients were reported being house-or bed-bounded [4], also over half of the patients are unemployed [5], and only 19% work full-time [3]. Since this disorder was first recorded in 1934, numerous researchers have struggled to explore its biological etiologies, including viral infection and autoimmune dysregulation [6], neuroendocrine abnormality due to decreased hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity [7], and immune impairment caused by the abnormal production of cytokines [8].…”

“…Approximately 20% of the U.S. media articles during 1987-2013 mislabeled ME/CFS as 'fatigue or psychosomatic-related disorder' , which trivialized the illness [33]. Currently, the disorder is generally considered a complex, multisystem neuroimmune disease [34]. In 2015, the IOM suggested a new term SEID and its criteria, thereby reducing the perception derived by the word 'fatigue' and focusing more on the core symptoms that systemically manifest as a physical illness [5].…”
