“…Excretory duct basal reserve cells are presumed to be the cell of origin of StDCs [6,7], most of which appear to have squamous differentiation, though divergent differentiation can produce a range of patterns of carcinoma. Of the 24 currently accepted cases, 10 were squamous, 7 mucoepidermoid carcinomas, 3 unspecified types of adenocarcinoma, 2 adenoid cystic carcinomas and 2 undifferentiated carcinomas.…”

“…Clinical differential diagnosis of a nodular lesion arising in the soft tissue of the cheek such as in the case presented would include epidermal cyst or lymph node, neoplasms of the parotid gland, lesions of the Stensen duct, and neoplasms of the accessory parotid gland. 5 Imaging can help in differentiating all these. Because of the superficial location, high-resolution sonography should be the primary imaging modality.…”

“…The intraglandular portion of the parotid duct has a pseudostratified epithelium that consists of columnar cells and smaller basal cells. As the parotid duct approaches the mouth, the epithelium becomes a true stratified epithelium 6 (Figure 5). It is the portion of the duct with this particular histology that is at greatest risk for injury during surgery.…”
