Undiagnosed Primary Cardiac Liposarcoma in an Adult

Abstract: Well-differentiated liposarcomas are locally aggressive malignant mesenchymal neoplasms, which rarely metastasize to the heart and pericardium. Primary cardiac liposarcomas are extremely rare as well, and in both instances, symptoms are difficult to recognize. Therefore, accurate antemortem diagnosis seldom happens. A rare case of an undiagnosed, primary, well-differentiated cardiac liposarcoma is presented, in a 67-year-old man who suffered a sudden cardiac death. The tumor seemed to arise from the epicardium… Show more

“…Liposarcomas can be divided into four subtypes: Well-differentiated liposarcoma (or atypical lipoma), myxoid/round cell liposarcoma, pleomorphic liposarcoma, and dedifferentiated liposarcoma. Well-differentiated liposarcoma accounts for 40–45% of liposarcoma cases and they usually have a very low degree of malignancy ( 2 ). A lipomatous presentation is the most common presentation among the various types of well-differentiated liposarcoma ( 6 ).…”

“…Primary cardiac tumours are very uncommon, and approximately 75% of primary cardiac tumours are benign. In adults, myxoma is the most common type of primary benign cardiac tumours, followed by lipoma, fibroma, and teratoma ( 1 , 2 ). The incidence of primary cardiac lipomas is only 0.17–0.19% based on autopsy reports ( 3 ).…”

“…3 – 6 This raises the important question of whether cancer diagnoses are missed before death in such cases or if such deaths are due to rare cancers, as was suggested in previous reports. 7 – 9 However, this question has remained unanswered.…”
