“…Response rate of 60 % is considered good and 70 % is considered very good[Alderman and Salem, 2010]. Our questionnaire surveys reached 55.8% and 61.3 % respectively, which should be regarded as adequate and good for statistical purposes and in the high-end of what has been achieved in similar questionnaire studies elsewhereDomejean-Orliaguet et al, 2004;Domejean et al, 2015;Gordan et al, 2009b;Kanzow et al, 2017a;Kanzow et al, 2017b;Kanzow et al, 2018]. “…Functional failures (i.e. fractures of restorations or tooth substance) seem to be the main reason for performing repair, although secondary caries seems to be the most frequent reason for restoration failure [Kanzow et al, 2017a;Kanzow et al, 2017b;Kanzow et al, 2018;. Dentists seem more prone to perform replacement of the total restoration when opposed to secondary caries.…”

“…A published systematic review and meta-analysis of the management and teaching of repairs included 29, mainly qualitative, studies that encompassed 7228 dentists and 276 dental schools. 311 The proportion of dentists claiming to perform repairs was 71.5% (95% CI, 49.7% to 86.4%), and 83.3% (95% CI, 73.6% to 90.0%) of dental schools taught repairs. The meta-analysis of 30 172 restorations showed that 31.3% (95% CI, 26.3% to 36.7%) of failed restorations had been repaired rather than replaced.…”

Nevertheless, repair of restorations is not practiced frequently worldwide partly due to lack of global guidelines, limited information on the long term clinical outcomes, continuous changes in materials and technologies and variations in dental teaching curricula worldwide as well as healthcare systems.…”
