Understanding the Determinants of Pro-Environmental Behavior among South Africans: Evidence from a Structural Equation Model

Abstract: This paper explores the relationship between pro-environmental behaviour (PEB) and environmental awareness, knowledge, attitudes, risk perceptions and activism in South Africa. To achieve this goal, the 2010–2012 data from the International Social Survey Program “Environmental III” was analysed by means of descriptive and inferential statistics, including the employment of the structural equation model. Significant differences were found between pro-environmental behaviour and other environmental variables suc… Show more

“…The findings of the study indicate that there is no direct impact of EK on PEB, thus refuting hypothesis 1. Previous research has often considered EK as the primary determinant of individuals' engagement in environmentally friendly actions (Si et al 2022;Rampedi and Ifegbesan, 2022;Polonsky et al, 2012). However, a considerable body of literature has demonstrated the limited strength of the direct association between EK and PEBs (Laroche et al, 2002).…”

“…The survey has been collecting data since the year 1981 and is widely regarded as a major cross-national data collection project on social parameters or factors such as gender roles, good governance, social capital, environmental protection, as well as subjective wellbeing [47][48][49][50][51]. The data have been used extensively across the world by various researchers to address their research aims, including to quantify PEB and its determinants [52][53][54][55]. Such surveys aimed to learn more about the characteristics of a specific population, but they selected only a sample of the study population to generate insights about the whole population [56].…”

“…To add, they advocated researchers to further study the link between place of residence and pro-sustainable behaviors in the developing nations (with varying physical aspects) to generalize results. Rampedi & Ifegbesan (2022) denoted that several earlier researches, which employed age, gender and place of residence offered dissimilar association outcomes with pro-environmental behavior. Although, females have more pro-environmental behaviors than males, other studies have dissimilar results.…”
