Understanding the Association of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Breast Cancer Among African American and European American Populations in South Carolina

Abstract: IntroductionAfrican-American (AA) women in the U.S. experience the lowest breast cancer survival rates among all ethnic groups compared to European Americans. 1,2 Breast cancer (BrCA) is the second leading cause of cancer death in South Carolina regardless of race. 3 Additionally, South Carolina has an overall BrCA mortality rate that is greater than the national average, driven exclusively by the high BrCA mortality rates seen in AAs. 4 The state ranks 7 th in diabetes prevalence in the United States, affecti… Show more

“…Based on the directed acyclic graph (DAG, Figure 1), race and age are confounders, or covariates that create a biasing path [23]. Adjusting for age and race is a minimally sufficient set for estimating the direct effect of OC use on breast cancer [24, 25]. …”

“…Patients are often not aware of the severity of T2DM and methods of prevention. Research shows diabetics often lack the necessary information to make educated decisions about their health 24 and that T2DM is associated with many other diseases such as colorectal and breast cancer [ 38 , 39 ]. Direct interventions or communication-based interventions, are necessary to reduce physical and financial burdens cast by this disease [ 31 ].…”

“…IR may, thus, initiate and promote CRC cell growth. Obesity and IR disproportionately affect AA women ( 18 , 19 ), suggesting that they tend to be more metabolically unhealthy than White women. A recent DNA methylation study ( 20 ) for AAs (mainly female individuals) with CRC detected aberrant methylations of CpG islands in the genes that are involved in an insulin network, supporting the critical role of IR in AA women's colorectal tumorigenesis.…”
