Understanding Symptom Burden in Patients With Advanced Cancer Living in Rural Areas

Abstract: OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the feasibility of using a biobehavioral approach to examine symptom burden in rural residents with advanced cancer. SAMPLE & SETTING: 21 patients with advanced lung, colorectal, or pancreatic cancer were enrolled at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. METHODS & VARIABLES: Using Cleeland’s cytokine-immunologic model of symptom expression, symptom burden (i.e., severity, count, and interference) and inflammatory cytokines were measured for 24 weeks. Potential predictors included dem… Show more

“…Symptoms such as pain, fatigue, and neuropathies can interfere with day-to-day functioning and outcomes of care. 19 , 20 The patient-participants in our sample described a variety of distressing symptoms, including fatigue and respiratory, neurological, muscular, and gastrointestinal symptoms, consistent with other research. 21 , 22 Given the distress participants were experiencing at CCT exit, it remains unclear whether palliative care consultation was offered at any point during the CCT.…”

“…People living in rural communities, including Appalachia, experience health disparities, such as higher rates of cancer incidence and mortality, particularly in lung, prostate, and colorectal cancers. 12 , 13 A similar trend was found related to the prevalence of cancer symptom burden, 14 including physical, psychosocial, and financial distress. 15 , 16 People living in rural areas also experience lower access to adequate broadband Internet, which enables connected health solutions.…”

“…In molecular biology, TUBA1C is a kind of α-tubulin subtype that is related to microtubules. It is a multi-functional cytoskeleton protein, and it participates in the process of cell mitosis and cell division [ 27 , 28 ]. Previous studies have reported that when the expression of TUBA1C is up-regulated, it significantly affects the growth and progression of tumor cells.…”
