Understanding Students' Parental Education Beyond First-Generation Status

Abstract: The goal of this study is to explore and compare the experiences and views that community college students face across multiple levels of parental education. The findings demonstrate significant differences across five different parental education levels, arguing that future research ought to expand current notions of parental education beyond a binary comparison (having a college educated parent or not).

“…Thus, some parents of first-generation students prefer that their children work rather than pursue a postsecondary degree. For first-generation students who come from immigrant backgrounds, a common expectation of their family is to continue to live at home and carry out family duties while attending college [24,25]. This may complicate their ability to do well as they are likely to not be as academically prepared as their non-first-generation counterparts and thus must juggle their familial responsibilities along with adjusting to the rigor of college coursework.…”

“…First, among the racial and ethnic groups, the Hispanic students tend to have less educated parents. Second, believing that the difficulty they encounter is due to their race is a trait that is more common among students with parents who have less than a high school education than for students' parents with a high school education (Lee et al, 2004).…”
