Green spaces are believed to improve the well-being of users in urban areas. While there are urban research exploring the emotional benefits of green spaces, these works are based on user surveys and case studies, which are typically small in scale, intrusive, time-intensive and costly. In contrast to earlier works, we utilize a non-intrusive methodology to understand green space effects at large-scale and in greater detail, via digital traces left by Twitter users. Using this methodology, we perform an empirical study on the effects of green spaces on user sentiments and emotions in Melbourne, Australia and our main findings are: (i) tweets in green spaces evoke more positive and less negative emotions, compared to those in urban areas; (ii) each season affects various emotion types differently; (iii) there are interesting changes in sentiments based on the hour, day and month that a tweet was posted; and (iv) negative sentiments are typically associated with large transport infrastructures such as train interchanges, major road junctions and railway tracks. The novelty of our study is the combination of psychological theory, alongside data collection and analysis techniques on a large-scale Twitter dataset, which overcomes the limitations of traditional methods in urban research.

ResumoO campo das máquinas sociais ainda é uma área nova, sem uma definição que tenha o senso comum dos pesquisadores, isso cria algumas dificuldades para entender qual o conceito, ou qual projeto de máquinas sociais devemos escolher. Este trabalho tem como objetivo investigar de forma detalhada, os trabalhos apresentados nas oficinas de máquinas sociais e nas principais bases de dados, a partir desta análise criamos um mapa de estudo, um esquema de categorização das obras e também gráficos de bolhas entre as categorizações. Foi produzido panorama da área de máquinas sociais, através da identificação dos principais tópicos, tipos, tendências e desafios através desta pesquisa preliminar, além de definir a maturidade das contribuições existentes. Este trabalho fornece uma base conceitual para a compreensão da área e também detecta os problemas de pesquisa e lacunas existentes no campo das máquinas sociais. AbstractThe field of social machines is still a new area, without a definition that has the common sense of researchers, this creates some difficulties to understand which concept, or which social machine project we should choose. This work aims to investigate in detail the work presented in the social machine workshops and in the main databases, from this analysis we create a study map, a categorization scheme of the works and also graphs of bubbles between the categorizations. It was produced a landscape of the area of social machines, was by identifying the main topics, types, trends and challenges through this preliminary research, as well as defining the maturity of existing contributions. In this position paper we present IT-centered challenges that lie in designing an architecture for a flexible, open, transferable, and replicable smart city ecosystem spanning a plethora of suppliers and systems. The background is the smart city and energy project +CityxChange. Its vision is to enable the co-creation and development of Positive Energy Blocks in smart sustainable cities. It will include the development of a framework and supporting tools to enable a common energy market, supported by a connected community and city integration. It will explore influences of the energy transition into city operations and urban planning, the integration of e-Mobility as a Service (eMaaS) into positive energy communities, and the growth of local trading markets and new business models. Digitalization, open architectures, and open data need to support these processes for open urban innovation in the ICT-enabled city.
