Understanding Size Effects and Forming Limits in the Micro-Stamping of Industrial Stainless Steel Foils

Abstract: This study investigates the effect of grain size and composition on the material properties and forming limits of commercially supplied stainless steel foil for bipolar plate manufacture via tensile, stretch forming and micro-stamping trials. It is shown that in commercially supplied stainless steel the grain size can vary significantly and that ‘size effects’ can be influenced by prior steel processing and composition effects. While the forming limits in micro-stamping appear to be directly linked to the plan… Show more

“…For this, however, other manufacturing processes and particle shapes would have to be investigated with regard to manufacturing tolerances and damage behavior. It would be conceivable to produce the test particles by micro-embossing [ 23 , 24 , 25 ] and then to harden the ductile materials [ 26 , 27 ] in order to obtain the required strength. Again, abstract shapes would be feasible, which so far is the only approach for DEM-CFD simulation.…”

“…Foil printing methods, in terms of efficiency and efficacy, are currently dominated by UV flexographic and UV lithographic offset printing technologies, the main reason being that they cause prints to dry quickly. Polymer printing involving the controlled production of small printing elements has a great influence on the size and forming limits of printed items in later micro-stamping procedures [3,4].…”

“…Bipolar plates can be made of various materials, and metal bipolar plates have been considered to reduce weight and enable high-volume manufacture at low cost [3]. Aluminium alloys [4], titanium [5], and stainless steel [6] have been applied for metal bipolar plates and formed with stamping [7], rubber pad forming [8], and hydroforming [9]. Liu and Hua [10] applied rubber pad forming to manufacture multi-row micro-channels from SS304.…”
