This research provides a sustainable way to treat water by removing heavy metal hazards (mercury ion) and biological pollutants (several strains of bacteria and fungi) through the eco-friendly synthesis of silver nanoparticles using the ethanol extract of the Saudi Haloxylon ammodendron shrub, which is planted in the Qassim desert. Further, this work confirms that these nanoparticles could be used as anticancer materials. The optimization factors of the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles were studied and obtained (volume ratio = 1:2, pH = 7.5, and temperature = 60 °C). The scanning electron microscope micrographs showed the spherical shape and the huge numbers of silver nanoparticles accumulated, while X-ray diffraction measurements gave the crystal size of these nanoparticles in the range of 10.64 nm. The application findings of these biofabricated silver nanoparticles demonstrated effective detection and removal of different concentrations of mercury ions (0–2500 ppm) from the polluted aqueous solutions. The work revealed that Haloxylon ammodendron extract enhanced the antibacterial and antifungal activities of silver nanoparticles against different strains of bacteria and fungi. As well, the anticancer activity examinations of these nanoparticles and the extract showed good and reasonable results.

“replacing coal with biomass briquette fuel” can effectively reduce carbon emissions. This study takes this as an example to discuss consumers’ “willingness to consume (WTC)”, “willingness to spend (WTS)” and related influencing factors to find the behavior-driven mechanism of consumer participation in “carbon neutrality”. Through the survey and analysis, the results show that 81.64% of the respondents support to consume Biomass Briquette Fuel (BBF) to replace coal. The annual WTS is 157.78 CNY per capita. The factors, such as the education, the relevant government policy support cognition, the level of cognition of health concepts, ecological environmental protection and resource regeneration, have a significant positive impact on the promotion in rural areas. Finally, we put forward corresponding policy recommendations. It provides a reference for motivating consumers to participate in “carbon neutrality” and promoting rural energy transformation to achieve the goal of “carbon neutrality”.

PurposeThis study aims to examine the effect of the different forms of attitudes on the behavioural intentions to adopt solar energy technologies (SETs) in Uganda. Although commonly examined, the effect of attitudes on people’s behavioural intentions to adopt SETs ought to be more distinctively examined to have a clear picture of how each of the identified sets of attitudes influences the adoption of SETs.Design/methodology/approachBased on a sample of 360 households from three urban districts in Uganda sampled using a multi-stage sampling technique, data were collected using a self-administrated structured questionnaire. The data were then analysed using partial least square–structural equation model with SmartPLS 3.0 software.FindingsThe study establishes that more specific attitudes affect behavioural intentions to adopt SETs than general pro-technology attitudes. Results reveal that both pro-environment and application-specific attitudes matter for behaviour intentions to adopt SETs amongst households. However, the general pro-technology attitudes are not significantly associated with behavioural intentions to adopt SETs.Practical implicationsThe results are important for producers and promoters of solar technology to craft appropriate promotion campaigns intended to increase the acceptance and usage of SETs. This means focussing on creating positive attitudes specific to particular applications and popularising specific uses of solar technologies.Originality/valueThe study provides an alternative approach to the general representation of the attitudes–intentions relationships by examining the differences in the attitudes developed towards the different aspects of these technologies as a substantial source of variations in adoption behaviour, which is rarely addressed.
