Understanding of transmission in the range of high-order photonic bands in thin opal film

Abstract: Diffraction in the face centered cubic lattice cannot explain some minima observed in the transmission spectra of self-assembled opal films. Here, we compared them with minima observed in the transmission spectra of a hexagonal close packed monolayer of spheres of the same diameter. The identity of the sphere packing on the surface of the opal film and in the sphere monolayer was demonstrated by the light diffraction at the sample surfaces. It was shown that excitation of surface propagating modes in the opal … Show more

“…The average sphere spacing was derived from the dispersion of the surface diffraction resonance using the fi tting function in the form 8 0 = d(sin " + sin( A + $)) for the position, 8 0 , of the fi rst order diffraction resonance maximum as a function of the angles of light incidence " and diffraction $ , where A is a constant that accounts for the azimuth misalignment of the plane of light incidence and the lattice orientation. [ 55 ] Angular resolved transmission and refl ectance spectra were obtained in pp-and ss-polarized light under white light illumination using a linearly polarized collimated beam (1 mm in diameter) from a tungsten lamp for illumination and an analyzer with following scrambler plate for light collection. Angular dependent spectra were acquired in the range from 0 o (6 o in the case of refl ectance) to 80 o of light incidence with the resolution down to 0.5-1 o .…”

“…9,23,28,40,42 Optical features at large angles arising from multiple Bragg coupling or diffraction have been investigated by several authors, 23,25,29,31,36 as well as optical spectra in the region of the second-order stop band with the important effects related to diffraction from high-energy bands. 32,33,35,45,46,48 Phase delay and group-velocity dispersion have also been determined. 7,19,38,46 Structural properties, especially in connection with stacking of lattice planes along the ͓111͔ direction and interplay of fcc versus other close-packed arrangements, have been thoroughly studied in recent years.…”

“…При этом порядки дифракции выше нулевого остаются неучтенными. Для детекти-рования более высоких чем нулевой, дифракционных порядков проводят измерения, отступая от направления падения луча или от плоскости зеркального отраже-ния [23,24]. В частности, с этой целью мы предложили использовать ретроотражение (рис.…”
