Plastic waste pollution in the marine environment triggers the formation of microplastics dissolved in seawater. Microplastics are one of the nutrients for plankton and phytoplankton. Through the food chain, microplastics can accumulate in the bodies of marine biota, until they finally reach the human body. The purpose of this research is to investigate and determine the microplastic group in fish in Makassar City KWB destinations. The method applied is maceration extraction using 70% C2H5OH for 3 days, then extracted with N-Hexane. The non-polar extracts identified the microplastic components using FTIR spectroscopy and analyzed the types of microplastics based on their absorption spectrum images. The results of the study were that all fish samples coded PS.B.1, PS.B.2, PS.B.3, were contaminated with secondary microplastics. Types of microplastics were identified, namely PP, PVC, PE, PS, PET and PC. The microplastic contaminants are thought to be the result of community activities. The public needs to be aware of the potential for microplastic accumulation in the bodies of marine fish that are consumed. Managers of Makassar City KWB destinations are advised to apply a pattern of supervision to the community to care about waste and educate the implementation of plastic waste recycling management

Microplastics comprise plastic particles that are less than 5 mm in size. Owing to a significant increase in plastic production, micro plastics have become ubiquitous pollutants worldwide. Several studies have reported that microplastics are harmful to living organisms because they can adsorb contaminants from the environment due to their unique physicochemical properties. The adsorbed contaminants on microplastics can be released and accumulated in living organisms, thereby adversely affecting the health of humans and animals. Since existing water treatment technologies as stand-alone processes cannot achieve complete removal of microplastics, reliable methods must be developed. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are a promising approach for the chemical treatment of contaminants such as microplastics. These processes utilize highly reactive oxygen species (e.g., hydroxyl radicals, sulfate radicals, superoxide anions, and singlet oxygen) to decompose microplastics completely. However, at this stage, AOPs can partially degrade and/or alter surface chemistry of microplastics. Therefore, extensive effort must be made to further study AOPs for complete decomposition of microplastics.

Context Microplastics are widespread in aquatic ecosystems and are commonly recorded in water, sediment and a broad spectrum of marine biota. Yet, the extent to which organisms ingest microplastics directly or indirectly by trophic transfer is largely unknown. Aims This study characterises microplastic abundance across intertidal water, sediment, and marine biota species of different trophic levels, and investigates whether biomagnification occurs. Methods Water, sediment, molluscs, crustaceans and fish were sampled from a single area in southern Australia. Key results Microplastics were recorded in 35% of water, 45% of sediment and 39% of biota samples. Plastic load was 0.36 ± 0.08 microplastics g−1 DW for sediment, 0.50 ± 0.17 microplastics L−1 for water, and 0.70 ± 0.25 microplastics individual−1 for biota. Biomagnification was not found, although similarities in plastic characteristics across biota may imply trophic transfer. Most of the microplastics were fibres (97.5%) of blue, black and transparent colour. Spectral analysis (μ-FTIR) indicated that polyester (50%) and polyethylene (42.3%) dominated the polymer compositions. Conclusions There were no significant differences in microplastic contamination among biota species, with no biomagnification identified. Implications We provide information on biomagnification of microplastics alongside a still uncommon characterisation of contamination in water, sediment and biota.
