Understanding Learners’ Behaviors in Serious Games

Abstract: Understanding play traces resulting from the learner's activity in serious games is a challenged research area. Especially, when the serious game is characterized by a large state space and a large amount of free interactions, the play traces become complex and thus hard to analyze and to interpret by teachers. In this paper, we present a framework that assists designers to build a model of an expert's solving process semi-automatically. Based on this model, we propose an algorithm that analyzes player's trace… Show more

“…Proposed frameworks:  Some frameworks have been proposed to simplify tasks in serious game design, including: two game analytics frameworks for people with intellectual disabilities (García-Tejedor, Cano, and Fernández-Manjón 2016; Nguyen, Gardner, and Sheridan 2018), a game-based assessment model (Halverson and Owen 2014), a framework to integrate design of event-stream features for analysis (Owen and Baker 2018), a framework to support tracking and analysis of learners in-game activities (Hauge et al 2014), a framework to help designers model experts' solving process almost automatically (Muratet, Yessad, and Carron 2016), an interoperable adaptivity framework (Streicher and Roller 2017), a framework for internet-scale experiments to inform and be informed by classroom and lab experiments (Stamper et al 2012), an open-source SGs framework for sustainability (Y. Xu et al 2014) and a framework for a mobile game application for adults with cystic fibrosis (Vagg et al 2018).…”

“…This functionality generates in-game hints to help players depending on their difficulties. The monitoring module integrated into the game is compatible with ECS architecture [20] and enables to monitor players' activities either at the level of entities (local monitoring) or at the level of families (set of entitiesglobal monitoring).…”

“…We proposed a solution in [10] for the first workflow (the feedback loop) and detailed the algorithm that exploits Petri nets properties to analyze the learners' actions, to characterize them with pedagogical labels, and to calculate a label-based score. These pedagogical labels provide users, and particularly teachers, with information about the learner's behavior such as, correct actions, erroneous actions, actions taking place too late or too early in the learner's solving process.…”
