Understanding invasion success: life-history traits and feeding habits of the alien crayfishOrconectes immunis(Decapoda, Astacida, Cambaridae)

Abstract: In the present study, the life history and diet of the highly successful North American invader Orconectes immunis was assessed for the first time in its introduced European range. In 2007, O. immunis population dynamics were monitored in a typical backwater habitat using unbaited funnel traps, and its life history was analysed using Von Bertalanffy's growth function. Juveniles hatched as early as March and may attain sexual maturity at the end of their first summer. The adult population moulted up to four tim… Show more

“…This becomes particularly apparent when compared to the more r-selected NICS, which, by contrast, feature a rapid life cycle and high fecundity (cf. Souty-Grosset et al, 2006;Chucholl, 2012). The syntopic occurrence with stone crayfish raises the question of ecological niche competition.…”

“…Interestingly, substantial divergence between O. immunis from European populations and reference sequences of presumably the same species were observed, suggesting that this taxon may represent a species complex in its original range . Spread of calico crayfish in the Rhine basin is relatively well documented and has been recently reviewed by Chucholl (2012). It successfully invaded several types of both lentic and lotic habitats where it became abundant.…”

“…Procambarus fallax f. virginalis in Germany (Chucholl and Pfeiffer, 2010) and Italy (Nonnis , Netherlands (Soes and Koese, 2010), Slovakia (Janský and Mutkovič, 2010) and surprisingly in Sweden (Bohman et al, 2013), Cherax destructor in Italy , and Cherax quadricarinatus in Slovenia (Jaklic and Vrezec, 2011). The introduction pathway of successful invader Orconectes immunis into Europe is unknown and pet trade is one of possible eventualities (Chucholl, 2012). Certain naturalized populations of commercially important Procambarus clarkii were most probably introduced in the same pathway (Chucholl, 2013).…”
