“…Hongkongers have experienced waves of identity and value transformation. Given its colonial past, the discussion of Hong Kong identity has been situated within a “Hong Kong vis-a-vis China” framework (Fong, 2017; Ho, 2022; Veg, 2017). It first arose in the 1970s as many residents who originally were refugees from Mainland China began to place a stronger emphasis on their common life experiences under British colonial rule (Johnson, 1994).…”

“…However, instead of ‘the demise of Hong Kong identity’ as some observers would expect (Mathews, Ma and Lui, 2008, p. 12), 2012 witnessed the rise of the localism, a political movement with the broad aim to protect Hong Kong's interests and identity against the threat from China. After the dissipation of the Umbrella Movement in 2014, some localists adopted the rhetoric of nationalism and several major nationalist groups were founded (Ho, 2022; Kaeding, 2017). 1 Against this background, most of the current work analyses Hong Kong nationalism through a framework of ‘Hong Kong vis‐à‐vis China’.…”

“…It has been observed that the Hong Kong nationalist discourse centres around the perceived China threat and scepticism towards Chinese immigrants (Ho, 2022; So, 2016; Wu, 2016), including the depiction of China as an outside invader and the fear that Chinese immigrants' would jeopardise Hong Kong's culture. It is therefore tempting to regard Hong Kong nationalism discourse as xenophobic in nature.…”

“…The political situation in Hong Kong, while different from Taiwan, is similar in that both face interventionist policies from an autocratic and ethnonationalist government in Beijing. For context, nationalism scholar Justin Chun‐ting Ho (2022: 2) explains that, in contrast to the PRC, “[i]n the 1980s and 1990s, Hong Kong developed a distinct identity that rested upon Hong Kong's comparatively liberal, albeit far from democratic, institutions and Hongkongers' exposure to liberal values.” Whereas Taiwanese have been able to fully elect their own democratic government since 1996, Hong Kong's political plight has languished in the shadow of Beijing's machinations since retrocession to the PRC in 1997.…”
