PurposeThe aim of this study is two-fold: (1) to promote a model of youth participatory research and offer a window of understanding into how it can be enacted and (2) to understand youth perspectives on youth empowerment. This study asks: “how can youth help us understand youth empowerment?”Design/methodology/approachThe study applies youth participatory action research (YPAR) and interpretative phenomenological analysis. The study illustrates how to enact a model of YPAR by engaging youth in the process of research in a youth-serving community non-profit organization.FindingsThis study sets out to make two important contributions, one methodological and one theoretical: First, the study contributes to our understanding of the opportunities and benefits of youth-engaged, peer-to-peer research. Specifically, this study promotes a model of youth participatory action research and knowledge making processes, and the associated social and formal benefits for youth. By extension, this study illustrates an approach to engage youth in formal contexts which has implications for both management and organizational studies and education. Finally, the study extends our understanding and conceptualization of the phenomenon of youth empowerment (as informed by youth perspectives).Originality/valueThe study offers insight into how to conduct youth participatory action research and specifically how to address two limitations cited in the literature: (1) how to authentically engage youth including how to share power, and (2) how to perform youth participatory action research, often critiqued as a black box methodology.

Technological developments and advances have influenced the emergence of a new generation, known as Generation Alpha. This generation comprises those born between 2010 and 2025. Born into a digital-savvy era, this generation has different characteristics from previous generations. This study aims to identify their special characteristics so that an approach can be taken, especially in managing children of the alpha generation in dentistry. A systematic search for articles, published between 2013 and 2023 analyzing the characteristics and behavior of the alpha generation and management behavior found in dentistry was conducted through PubMed, Google Scholar, SCOPUS, and EBSCO. The final analysis was carried out on 47 articles consisting of 10 articles discussing the characteristics of the alpha generation in general and 37 articles discussing the management of their behavior in dentistry. All the published articles found that an alpha child's characteristics are closely related to behavior management in dentistry. The ease with which alpha children adapt to technology is one of the strategies for managing the behavior of alpha children. However, apart from this, the alpha children tend to be unappreciative of the process, which can affect dental behavior management. Specific characteristics of the alpha generation, such as increased exposure to technology, digital media consumption habits, and lack of respect for the process, have important implications for communication and adaptation to patient behavior management in dentistry. Understanding these characteristics is crucial for designing an effective communication strategy and adjusting appropriate behavior management to maintain the quality of dental care for this generation in the dentistry environment.

Currently, in the alpha era of early childhood born in the 2010 with the advancement of the era and technological developments, traditional games that involve physical activity are barely carried out at home or at school and traditional games have begun to be eroded and neglected since the alpha generation got to know gadgets and the internet, because it is more fun to play. The purpose of this study was to determine the existence of traditional games as a physical activity for early childhood in the alpha era. This study uses mixed methods (Mixed Methods) as the research method with research designs including: (1) Exploratory Design Source (2) Explanatory Design Source (3) Triangulation Design Source, as well as data analysis using a Likert scale and assisted by SPSS version 23. The results show that the existence of traditional games has the support of the community and schools to make traditional games exist whenever and wherever, there are some areas of traditional games that need support from all parties, both family and school so that these traditional games continue to exist in the alpha era. Findings in the field indicate that there needs to be leeway from all parties (teachers, parents, community) to give time, land, and attention to early childhood children to play traditional games in the surrounding environment, both at school and at home.Keyword: the existence of traditional games; physical activity; alpha era
