The impact of climate change has resulted in a decline in agricultural productivity. This study estimated farmers’ perceptions of climate change by comparing Imogiri Sub-district represent highland area and Pundong Sub-district deputize lowland area farmers in Bantul Regency. This study collected data using questionnaires to 79 respondents then analysis by likerts scale and descriptive statistical. The results showed that there six indicators of climate change became farmers’ perceptions. The farmers perception on highland regarding climate change is that 54% of farmers feel a decrease in rainfall, 54% feel drought, 55.2% feel a longer dry season, 60.8% feel reduced water sources, 74.4% feel a decrease in crop quality and 73.2% feel a decrease in crop quantity. At the same time, the perception of farmers in the lowland area regarding climate change is 66.9% of farmers feel a decrease in rainfall, 68.28% feel drought, 71.03% feel a longer dry season, 68.28% feel reduced water sources, 77.93% feel a decrease in crop quality and 77.93% feel a decrease in crop quantity. The importance of farmers’ perceptions of climate change may be used to adaptation from climate change. Understanding farmers’ perceptions can aid the impact of climate change on agricultural productivity.

Mapping small inland wetlands in the South-Kivu province by integrating optical and SAR data with statistical models for accurate distribution assessment

There are several techniques for mapping wetlands. In this study, we examined four statistical models to assess the potential distribution of wetlands in the South-Kivu province by combining optical and SAR images. The approach involved integrating topographic, hydrological, and vegetation indices into the four most used classifiers, namely Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Random Forest (RF), Boosted Regression Tree (BRT), and Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt). A wetland distribution map was generated and classified into 'wetland' and 'non-wetland.' The results showed variations in predictions among the different models. RF exhibited the most accurate predictions, achieving an overall classification accuracy of 95.67% and AUC and TSS values of 82.4%. Integrating SAR data improved accuracy and precision, particularly for mapping small inland wetlands. Our estimations indicate that wetlands cover approximately 13.5% (898,690 ha) of the entire province. BRT estimated wetland areas to be ~ 16% (1,106,080 ha), while ANN estimated ~ 14% (967,820 ha), MaxEnt ~ 15% (1,036,950 ha), and RF approximately ~ 10% (691,300 ha). The distribution of these areas varied across different territories, with higher values observed in Mwenga, Shabunda, and Fizi. Many of these areas are permanently flooded, while others experience seasonal inundation. Through digitization, the delineation process revealed variations in wetland areas, ranging from tens to thousands of hectares. The geographical distribution of wetlands generated in this study will serve as an essential reference for future investigations and pave the way for further research on characterizing and categorizing these areas.

The move towards reducing environmental and health risks related to pesticide application in smallholder agriculture requires a more detailed understanding of farmers’ awareness and pesticide use practices. Drawing on field observations and interviews with 90 randomly selected farmers, this study assesses the choice of pesticide, use patterns and the level of awareness of pesticide risks among male and female farmers growing vegetables on Idjwi Island, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The main crops grown are tomatoes, eggplants, and cabbages, which are vulnerable to pest attacks, leading to fruit rot (70%), leaf holes, and spots (17%), resulting in significant economic losses. To protect crops, farmers use various pesticides, including fungicides (e.g., Metalaxyl, Mancozeb) and insecticides (e.g., profenofos, Cypermethrin), based on their availability on local market, perceived effectiveness, and relatively affordable prices. Although the results did not reveal significant differences in pesticide use patterns between male and female farmers, men (41%) make decisions about pesticide purchase and use within households either alone or jointly with their spouses (31%). Regrettably, farmers disregard safety instructions and hygiene practices following pesticide application, leading to concerns about public health and the environmental impact of using these products. While we highlight the factors influencing farmers’ willingness to wear protective equipment, findings also show that 75% of the participants are willing to pay $US 5 for any alternative method to pesticide use. This study emphasizes the need for improving awareness and recommends field farmers’ schools to train farmers on pesticides’ proper usage and management. The results suggest further research on farmers’ exposure to pesticide and the exploration of existing alternative methods based on integrated pest management to advance sustainable agriculture.
