Understanding factors that facilitate the inclusion of pain education in undergraduate curricula: Perspectives from a UK survey

Abstract: Background: Studies in Europe, North America and Australasia suggest that one in five adults suffer from pain. There is increasing recognition that pain, particularly chronic pain, represents a global health burden. Many studies, including two national surveys exploring the content of undergraduate curricula for pain education, identify that documented pain education in curricula was limited and fragmentary. “…Pain education is fragmented and limited by multiple disciplines, making the integration of knowledge more difficult and complex. 4,28,33,34 Some barriers hamper the implementation of CP teaching in MS, such as: the shortage of human resources, in particular pain specialists; the perception that pain medicine is not essential to medical education; the resistance to an increasing workload, allocated to pain education, in an already overcrowded schedule. 10,14 The Institute of Medicine reports that the key-problems of MS are the lack of: diversity in the presentation of the topic 'pain'; integration between the basic sciences and clinical knowledge; clinical examples/models, particularly of specialists in CP.…”

“…Validity can also be obtained by the researcher using member checking and allowing the participants to review the interview transcripts (Wilson et al, 2016). The widely-used criteria of trustworthiness in qualitative research are credibility, transferability, and confirmability (Carr et al, 2016). By examining data, a researcher can illuminate problems through member checking and create integrity of the empirical findings (Lishner, 2015).…”
