Using family systems and attachment theory frameworks, this study identified specific dimensions of the parent–adolescent relationship and examined the association between those dimensions and adolescent depression and delinquency, and parental depression 2 years later in a racially and ethnically diverse sample. Parent–adolescent relationships were identified using a person‐centered approach, latent profile analysis, using closeness, communication, conflict, and autonomy as dimensions of the relationship. The latent profile analysis produced a four‐profile solution, which was labeled secure, avoidant, anxious, and detached. Next, parent and adolescent outcomes were examined. Results indicated that adolescents in the detached profile exhibited the highest amount of delinquency, whereas the parents exhibited the lowest amount of depression. Adolescents in the avoidant profile also exhibited high levels of delinquency, and parents in this profile also exhibited the highest amount of depression symptoms. No profile differences were found for adolescent depression symptoms. Implications for family interventions are discussed.

Relational Experiences as Explanatory Factors for the Development of Criminal and Antisocial Behavior: A Scoping Review

Similar findings relate to experiences of emotional care; sensitivity, warmth and closeness were identified as important protective factors for these behaviors, whereas hostility, rejection and detachment were risk factors for the development of delinquent behaviors. Further, there is a suggested need to enhance parenting skills through program activities and address the internal working model of the child/adolescent through therapy to prevent/reduce the development of criminal and antisocial behavior in these vulnerable populations. The study ends with a discussion of needed research. It is from this attachment relationship that the child forms an internal working model, which refers to the psychological construct through which the child views him-or herself and others and influences the affective components of behavior and interaction (Aldgate and Jones 2006;Bowlby 1969). It was established early on that delinquent behavior could originate based on a child's experiences within his or her family; for example, mother-child separation during the first 5 years of life has been demonstrated to be associated with persistent stealing (Bowlby 1950, p. 572). Later, different styles of attachment were identified, typically categorizing infants as secure or insecure, with insecure infants commonly divided into insecure/avoidant, insecure/ambivalent and disorganized Abstract A large proportion of children and youth are growing up in harmful caring environments that can affect their behavioral strategies later in life. Despite the existing of an extensive literature regarding prevalence, characteristics of delinquent and criminal behavior, as well as, individual and environmental risk factors, there are gaps that remains unexplained regarding this problem. There is little evidence about what is known about the relational experiences in children and adolescents and the development of criminal and antisocial behavior. This scoping review was developed to address the matter of criminal and antisocial behavior by analyzing how this is associated with children and adolescent's relational experiences with primary caregivers. In addition, the review examines recommendations provided in this field regarding intervention strategies to prevent or reduce the prevalence of delinquent behaviors. A total of 528 studies were identified in the databases of ProQuest, Web of Science (Core Collection) and PsychINFO. After applying the exclusion and inclusion criteria, 17 published studies were included in the analysis. Policy makers, teachers and parents can help foster these skills by improving the learning environments in which they develop. This paper reviews international evidence, including those from Japan, to better understand the learning contexts that can be conducive to children's social and emotional development. It sheds light on features that underlie successful learning programmes including intervention studies. Reviewed evidence suggests that there are important roles for families, schools and communities to play in enhancing children's social and emotional skills, and that coherence across multiple learning contexts needs be ensured. While most of the evidence comes from the United States and the United Kingdom, the paper suggests that further efforts could be made in Japan in collecting and better exploiting micro-data on a range of social and emotional skills, as well as in evaluating effectiveness of interventions designed to raise social and emotional skills.
