Understanding Engineering Students' Stress and Emotions during an Introductory Engineering course.

Abstract: Katherine Cheng is a doctoral student at the Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics at Arizona State University. She is interested in understanding the origins of students' academic performance and their well-being. Kat completed her BS and MA in Psychology, and is currently majoring in Family and Human Development. Her research emphasizes a multi-disciplinary perspective, including bringing together constructs from the fields of motivation, human development, and biopsychology. Her research is dedicated… Show more

“…The researchers found a negative correlation between class-related positive emotions (i.e., enjoyment) and the students' cortisol levels, indicating that the more enjoyment students self-reported, the less psychological stress they experienced. Furthermore, they found that students' value of the class in achieving their future goals was instrumental in predicting the positive emotions they experienced (Husman et al, 2015). Both of these studies demonstrate the potential of multimodal approaches including a biological component in providing a measure of the classroom experience.…”

“…No correlations were found between positive and negative emotions and EDA, with one exception in Workshop Topic 1 where EDA and negative emotions demonstrated a significant negative correlation. It is possible that because it was the first topic in the semester, there may have been anticipatory responses at play as others have found (Husman et al, 2015;Spangler et al, 2002) or it may point to the need to include additional participants in future studies. Extending this study to include larger samples sizes would verify the findings identified here, including those that showed promising potential correlations.…”
