Understanding early dementia: EEG, MRI, SPECT and memory evaluation

Abstract: BackgroundAn increase in the EEG upper/low α power ratio has been associated with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and to the atrophy of temporoparietal brain areas. Subjects with a higher α3/α2 frequency power ratio showed lower brain perfusion than in the low α3/α2 group. The two groups show significantly different hippocampal volumes and correlation with θ frequency activity.MethodsSeventy-four adult subjects with MCI underwent clinical and neuropsychological evaluation, elect… Show more

“…The α3/α2 proportion was chosen because previous evidence of our group has demonstrated that patients with MCI with larger α3/α2 ratio are at major risk to develop AD. 19 22 Our results show that the MCI group with more significant α3/α2 ratio is characterized by a greater cortical decay than low and middle α3/α2 ratio groups, confirming earlier findings of our group. 32 46 Furthermore, greater decay is noticeable in two critical cerebral areas: the precuneus alongside the supramarginal gyrus (a cortical area having a place with the inferior parietal lobule) in the two hemispheres.…”

“…In addition, the PCC and precuneus are also closely related to memory processing, particularly episodic memory recall 36–38 . Previous studies have reported that scores on memory tests are negatively correlated with a decline of function in the PCC and precuneus in aMCI 39–42 . The results of the present study support the usefulness of combining functional assessment of the MP region and memory function assessment using SPECT for one of the features of aMCI.…”
