To study the effect of soil erosion on the distribution and migration pattern of radionuclides, the levels of 239+240 Pu and 137 Cs in alpine meadow soil were measured in the Hongsongwa Nature Reserve, Hebei Province. The measured activities of 239+240 Pu and 137 Cs in surface soil ranged from 0.028 to 2.781 Bq/kg and from 1.3 to 59.8 Bq/kg, respectively. The distribution of 137 Cs and 239+240 Pu is uneven and significantly correlated with the organic matter content and altitude variations within the study area. Core samples were collected from both ridge and valley locations to assess erosion rates, revealing that ridge areas experienced approximately 2.5 times higher erosion rates (18.0 t ha −l a −1 ) compared to valleys (7.3 t ha −l a −1 ). The vertical migration behavior of 239+240 Pu and 137 Cs was quantitatively described by a convection-diffusion equation model. Results indicated that core samples taken from the ridge displayed significantly higher apparent diffusion coefficients (D Cs = 4.57 cm 2 /y; D Pu = 2.42 cm 2 /y) as well as apparent convection coefficient (ν Cs = 0.31 cm/y; ν Pu = 0.43 cm/y), which were approximately 10 and 2 times those observed in reference sample (D Cs = 0.33 cm 2 /y; D Pu = 0.32 cm 2 /y; ν Cs = 0.16 cm/y; ν Pu = 0.17 cm/y), respectively. The migration rate of 239+240 Pu is accelerated by 39% compared to that of 137 Cs due to soil erosion. The diffusion and convection rates of both isotopes in the valley sample are similar to those in the reference sample. In general, soil erosion significantly affects the horizontal and vertical migration of 239+240 Pu and 137 Cs.

The increasing demand and rising price of wood-based materials have led to a need for alternative raw materials in particleboard production. Agricultural waste, such as waste wood and recycled wood waste, as well as food waste, can serve as ideal alternatives to traditional wood chips, which account for more than half of the production cost. Utilizing agricultural waste, food waste, and industry materials is not only cost-effective but also a key principle of the circular economy, leading to reduced carbon dioxide emissions. Nevertheless, there is a lack of an updated, comprehensive assessment of the exploitation of these materials in particleboard production. This article reviews the current state-of-the-art particleboard production using environmentally friendly agricultural and food waste materials and recycled wood waste. The review categorizes particleboards into three groups: particleboards made with agricultural waste, food industry waste, and wood-based waste. The purpose is to compare the mechanical and physical properties of the resulting particleboards and establish their use in building construction according to various particleboard standards. This study demonstrates that wood-based, agricultural, and food waste can be transformed into high-quality, eco-friendly particleboards that surpass industry standards and are suitable for various applications such as construction, furniture, and laboratory equipment. The integration of these waste materials into mainstream production highlights the role of innovative recycling techniques in promoting sustainable urban development and construction practices. This approach significantly contributes to reducing deforestation, preserving natural habitats, and providing affordable housing, supporting a more sustainable and responsible approach to resource management. This review is undertaken to address the critical need for sustainable alternatives in particleboard production amidst environmental and economic challenges. It aims to consolidate recent advancements in using waste materials, providing a comprehensive assessment essential for future research and industry application. This effort aligns with global environmental objectives and advances the circular economy.

Quantifying soil redistribution rates, including both erosion and deposition, is critical for understanding erosion processes, landscape evolution, land management strategies, and the carbon cycle. In the Northeast Pacific coastal temperate rainforest, the interaction of perhumid climate and dense coniferous forest tends to form Spodosols which are soils characterized by a subsurface accumulation of organic matter and iron and aluminum oxides, across a range of contrasting lithologies. Deep Spodosols are frequently found on steep backslopes (up to 60%) of colluvial deposits, where shallower soils would typically be expected. We hypothesized that deep Spodosols in Southeast Alaska indicate slope stability, exhibiting negligible soil redistribution rates and stable surfaces regardless of the lithology. Our objective was to quantify soil redistribution rates for Spodosols formed on steep slopes across a range of lithologies in hilly and mountainous areas of Juneau, AK. We used 239+240Pu isotopes to quantify soil erosion and deposition rates in Spodosols formed on colluvial deposits from tonalite, slate, metavolcanic rock, and phyllite. 239+240Pu measurements revealed negligible soil redistribution rates for all studied pedons, ranging from erosion rates of 0.51 t/ha/year to deposition rates up to 0.43 t/ha/year. No difference was detected between the hill and mountain landforms, further supporting the idea that Spodosols could indicate slope stability over decadal timescales across the region. Understanding the resilience of Spodosols to erosion processes in varied lithologies and landforms on steep slopes is paramount for making informed decisions regarding sustainable land use, landslide risk mitigation, and effective carbon sequestration strategies.
