Novel consumer goods and services in mobility, food, homes and energy domains are needed to help mitigate climate change. Appealing attributes of low carbon innovations accelerate their diffusion out of early-adopting segments into the mass market (1, 2). In this paper we synthesise insights on the attributes of low carbon consumer innovations across multiple domains. Using a directed literature review and content analysis, guided by Levitt's hierarchical ring model which distinguishes core from non-core attributes, we identified over 170 relevant studies across mobility, food, homes and energy domains. We extracted a set of 16 attributes generalisable to low carbon innovations across multiple domains of consumption, with the exception of energy innovations which appeal on a reduced set of attributes. Using multi-dimensional scaling techniques we found the appeal of noncore attributes varies between domains but core attributes are consistent across domains in line with Levitt's theory. As examples, low-carbon consumer innovations within mobility and food domains share non-core attributes related to improved private and public health, whereas innovations within food and home domains share non-core attributes related to technology acceptance and usability. We develop these findings to argue that many low carbon consumer innovations are currently positioned to appeal to a distinctive but limited group of early adopters who value novelty and climate benefits. To achieve mass market diffusion, product and service development, policy interventions, and communication strategies should focus on enhancing a wider set of attributes to broaden consumer appeal. Although metro systems are established in many Asian cities including Chengdu, they have yet to cover every corner of a city. Understanding the transfer behavior of passengers can provide insight into achieving efficient and sustainable urban transport systems. Combining shared mobility programs with metro to improve the weaknesses of traditional feeder modes is viewed as the most promising line of business in sustainable transportation for the near future. Therefore, this study aims to comprehend the factors affecting the usage regularity of shared mobility by deepening the knowledge on endogenous and exogenous effects, and integrating two modes, namely bike-sharing and ridesourcing. Two systems are cross-compared, first in respect of their travel characteristics. Then, a binary logistic model is employed to capture the influences of trip characteristics and travel environment characteristics on their usage frequency. Researchers found that trip distance is significantly associated with users’ mode options, indicating that bike-sharing and ridesourcing mainly serve short-distance and long-distance transfer users, respectively, although some users may be confused which feeder mode to choose for the journeys of 2 km to 4 km. There were also meteorological and temporal influences, with the competition and complementation of multiple shared mobility feeder modes being likely to change under extreme weather conditions, during peak hours, or on weekends. Besides, metro-shared mobility users value the accessibility of two kinds of transport service, which is affected by the metro station and its surrounding built environment. This study and the proposed policy implications are helpful for embracing a sustainable mobility design from general optimum.

The transport sector has produced numerous carbon emissions in China, and it is important to promote low carbon commuting. As an emerging mode of urban low-carbon transportation in China, shared bicycles have been used by more and more citizens on a daily basis, with advantages of green and low-carbon emissions to environment, flexibility for short trips, and convenience for covering the distance between the normal low-carbon transportation and destinations. However, the imbalanced distribution of shared bicycles along subway lines, especially during the morning peak hours, has directly restricted their performance in urban traffic. In this paper, an integer linear program model (ILPM) is proposed to obtain an optimal low-carbon distribution plan of shared bicycles connecting with the subway line (SBCSL) during the morning peak hours. First, an objective function is built to improve the carbon emission reduction of SBCSL. Second, constraint functions are extracted considering the quantity of bicycles to be distributed to the subway line as well as the distribution limits of each subway station. At last, a case study is conducted on the distribution of shared bicycles in Beijing Subway Line 13 of China during the morning peak hours. The results show that the ILPM is of significance to provide optimal distribution scheme of shared bicycles in subway line with different station types including office-oriented, residential-oriented, and hybrid-oriented stations.
