Understanding and Applying an Integrative Taxonomy of Motivation Sources to Professional and Personal Settings

Abstract: This exercise incorporates an innovative teaching approach to demonstrate how motivation sources are evident in behavior and decisions. The exercise is based on the integrative typology proposed by Leonard, Beauvais, and Scholl and validated by Barbuto and Scholl. “…Motivation can be viewed from many different perspectives, and has been researched long and exhaustively in social sciences literature (Higgins & Kruglanski, 2000;Pittman, 1998). As indicated in the following examples, the results have provided an integration of different concepts (Barbuto, 2001). “…One such promising integrated theory is that of Leonard, Beauvais, and Scholl (1999). The initial presentation of the integrated motivational theory, or "metatheory" (Leonard, et al, 1999), was generally well received (Barbuto & Scholl, 1998;Barbuto, Fritz, & Marx, 2000;Barbuto, 2001;Humphreys & Einstein, 2004;Kooij, de Lange, Jansen, & Dikkers, 2008;Gulzar, Shamim, & Khuwaja, 2010) and incorporated into classic readings in organizational psychology (Ott, Parks, & Simpson, 2003). Leonard, et al's theory (1999) includes many important motivational concepts previously identified in the literature, using the idea of the self-concept.…”

“…The reported development and reliability of the inventory indicates it is an effective self-report measure of the five factors of Leonard, et al's meta-theory of motivation (1999); it has been applied with some success, primarily by its author (Barbuto, , 2001Barbuto & Xu, 2006;Barbuto & Story, 2007, 2008. However, concern raised by an examination of the face validity led to a review of the factor structure by Ryan (2010) in a sample of 252 professionals (73.8% women) working in the financial services, health administration, retail, and distribution sectors in Ireland.…”
