Understanding analytical drawings of preschool children: the importance of a dialog with a child

Abstract: Child's understanding and intentions are not always easy to read in drawings. This is particularly evident in the type of drawings we refer to as 'analytical drawings'. In order to understand analytical drawings made by preschool children, it is important to have a dialogue with the young authors. “…The importance of the word in psychoanalysis was emphasized by J. Civitarese, who studied the role of the word in psychoanalytic dialogue (Civitarese&Foresti, 2008). The work (Podobnik, Jerman, &Selan, 2021) is also noteworthy, which reveals and scientifically substantiates the importance of dialogue with children in the analysis of their psychoanalytic drawings.…”

“…On the other hand, especially in the early stages of development, the educator or teacher gains insight into the child' s understanding of phenomena that they cannot (yet) articulate clearly enough. Experts in the field of visual arts have long stressed the importance of respect for expressive diversity and the associated search for individual artistic responses to content, as this can contribute to the development of creativity (not only in the visual arts) if properly encouraged (Podobnik, Jerman & Selan, 2021). Indeed, artistic fields contribute to the development of divergent thinking and the ability to design different solutions, which is particularly important in fields whose foundations come from the arts, but the positive effects can also be transferred more broadly.…”

The research opportunities described are useful for both preschool teachers and primary teachers, as both encounter a population where the visual arts can effectively supplement insight into a child' s (pupil' s) understanding of a particular content (Podobnik, Jerman, & Selan, 2021).…”

“…The importance of a lexical unit in Psychoanalysis was emphasized by other researchers , also who studied the role of the word in a psychoanalytic dialogue (Civitarese & Foresti, 2008). Some other articles (Podobnik, Jerman & Selan, 2021) reveal and scientifically substantiate the importance of a dialogue with children in the process of the analysis of their psychoanalytic drawings. The category of "a dialogical Self" testifies to the constructive function of the language, which overcomes the "monological Self", which is proved in the researches of Muller (2016).…”
