UNDERSEA: An Exemplar for Engineering Self-Adaptive Unmanned Underwater Vehicles

Abstract: Recent advances in embedded systems and underwater communications raised the autonomy levels in unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) from human-driven and scripted to adaptive and self-managing. UUVs can execute longer and more challenging missions, and include functionality that enables adaptation to unexpected oceanic or vehicle changes. As such, the simulated UUV exemplar UNDERSEA introduced in our paper facilitates the development, evaluation and comparison of self-adaptation solutions in a new and importan… Show more

“…To mitigate this threat, the DPM system, model and QoS requirements are based on a validated real-world case study taken from the literature (Qiu et al 2001;Sesic et al 2008), which we are familiar with from our previous work (Calinescu and Kwiatkowska 2009). This is also the case for the UUV system, model and requirements (Calinescu et al 2015;Gerasimou et al 2014Gerasimou et al , 2017. For the FX system, the model and requirements were developed in close collaboration with a foreign exchange domain expert.…”

“…The aim of our research is to explore a transversal technology in which some particularities are application dependent but there is a strong core of substantial ideas functional for a variety of systems. In this field, Gerasimou et al [ 28 ] presents a predefined set of ocean surveillance missions, adaptation scenarios, and controller implementations which are integrated into the UNDERSEA tool, [ 29 ]. In [ 30 ], the uncertainty of self-adaptive systems is handled through requirement thresholds and component interactions.…”

“…The results of the studies investigating the Rainbow, MUSIC, and DiVA frameworks have their own advantages and disadvantages. Besides the previously mentioned framework related studies, various case studies on application of self-adaptive control loop are introduced [ 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 ]. However, until now, most of the proposed frameworks and applications based on a self-adaptive mechanism provide answers for local adaptation to dynamically change the configuration of software components inside a single system.…”
