This paper describes the result of student self-reflection on their writing ability and the application of the process writing approach conducted in their academic writing class. The data was collected through a self-reflection written by the participants. The students were guided to reflect on their learning experience in two aspects: their views on their writing ability and the application of the process writing approach in the classroom. Forty-four students of the English literature program from the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Mahasaraswati Denpasar University, were chosen as the participants for this study through a purposive sampling method. This method was ideal because these students have undergone similar learning experiences within the same context, which provided rich data for the study. The result of their self-reflection was analysed using a qualitative approach. The findings indicate that more than half of the participants perceived their writing ability as lacking. Less than 10% of the participants were confident in their writing ability, and the rest saw improvement in their ability but required further practice and guidance. In terms of the application of process writing, the majority of participants agreed that it had a positive impact on their writing process.

Using Tenggerese Oral Folktales for Teaching Paragraph Writing: How Good Are the Students’ Composition?

Indonesia is a nation that is rich in cultural artifacts. One of the cultural artifacts is the oral literature which is spread across the archipelago. This study is intended to describe the use of documented local Indonesian oral folktales applied for a paragraph writing class. The oral literature chosen was the Tenggerese oral literature in Pasuruan, East Java, Indonesia. The study used a mixed-method design. The subjects of the study were 46 students of the English Education Study Program who joined a paragraph writing class in Universitas PGRI Wiranegara, Pasuruan. The students’ writing was assessed by using a primary trait scoring rubric. The result shows that 98% of the students were able to make a topic sentence that shows comparison and contrast paragraphs. Although most of the students were able to make comparison and contrast paragraphs (83%), half of them were still unable to develop the ideas in the paragraph well (52%). The probable causes identified were first, the students were not given enough chance to revise and edit their composition, and secondly, the documented local oral literature lacked details in its story development. Yet, the study implies that local oral folklores have a chance to be used as one of the teaching materials for skill courses.

Writing research is one of the most tedious academic tasks. The study aimed to determine students' lived experiences in terms of the difficulties faced and coping mechanisms in writing research. Ten (10) participants were purposively selected for the study. Maslow's motivation theory and Collaborative learning theory were the foundation theories of the study. A phenomenological research design and Collaizi's data analysis (Gumarang Jr. et al., 2021) were utilized to obtain the result of the study. Researchers collected data through a semi-structured questionnaire via google forms, virtual focus group discussion, and observation notes. Researchers gathered information using a semi-structured questionnaire administered via google forms, a virtual focus group discussion, and observation notes. The findings revealed that the difficulties encountered were relevant research dilemmas, unamenable behavior of members, scarcity of time, and insufficient academic assistance in learning. Additionally, coping mechanisms include seeking academic assistance, autodidact behavior, time efficacy, and self-acceptance. The study findings enable the education sector to provide interventions for students to improve the quality of their research writing by attending enhancement programs, training, and webinars.
