Background Pakistan being a low‐ and middle‐income country, its institutes are substantially deficient in scientific and technological aspects and share limited research contributions to the world repositories. Therefore, there is a rising concern to reflect on the history and status of publishing attitudes among medical students in Pakistan and to highlight and address the barriers that they are facing. Methods A study was conducted aiming to determine the experience, motivation, and attitude of medical students in regarding publishing practices throughout Pakistan in several medical colleges. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to find the independent predictors of students publishing a research article. Forward selection was used to arrive at the final stepwise logistic regression. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated. p < 0.05 was considered significant for all statistical tests. Results From a sample size of 1225 participants, only 6.6% of students had published an article in our study. Of these, 59% were males and 31.3% were in final year. Males were more likely to publish articles than females (OR = 2.69, 95% CI: 1.37–5.26) and final‐year students were more likely to publish articles than first‐year students (OR = 7.48, 95% CI: 1.34–41.81). Students that had the knowledge that performing research is the way through which they will be judged for jobs had significantly higher odds of getting an article published (OR = 16.21, 95% CI: 3.65–71.88). Additionally, students who had been taught how to write a paper and those who knew the process of submitting an article were more likely to get published than the others. Conclusion Our study has successfully highlighted the status of publishing among medical students in Pakistan. Our findings serve as an eye opener and call to action for authorities to address the grievances of students in terms of barriers, lack of mentorship, and lack of research teaching. We hope our findings can guide a strong policy change to facilitate the next generation of passionate researchers.

Psychiatry and mental health teaching programs of eight portuguese-speaking schools of medicine: A comparative analysis

BackgroundImprovement of teaching methods in psychiatry has been the subject of permanent adaptation and innovation. Strengthening graduate education skills in psychiatry and mental health will allow physicians to have the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to carry out early diagnosis and treatment at primary healthcare settings, taking into consideration that the population should benefit from the best interventions by general practitioners.ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to examine how the undergraduate program of psychiatry and mental health subject in the schools of medicine of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries in the three continents is structured.MethodsThe methods include a narrative description of the program of psychiatry, the workload, the delivery and assessment methods, and the ethical and socio-cultural aspects in psychiatry and research made by the director of the course of psychiatry in Portugal, Brazil, and Mozambique.ResultsEight schools of medicine from Portugal, Brazil, and Mozambique participated in the study. All these schools use standards which are defined by the regulatory bodies of their countries. The teaching year varied between the third and the sixth. The workload varied between 140 and 224 h. Topics were addressed in presence or virtual methods. Combined qualitative and quantitative assessment is done to encompass competencies, skills and knowledge based on clinical histories, ongoing assessment, seminars, and final written tests. Ethical and socio-cultural aspects in various strands are taught to be linked to the local reality. Research is encouraged by using grants.ConclusionTeaching psychiatry follows global and national standards and is organized according to the reality of each country. Psychiatry departments from these three continents invest in teaching methodologies that encourage self-knowledge and the development of critical thinking, which is evaluated in a holistic context. The authors consider that the programs should have a workload according to the current burden of mental illness.

A formação de grupos acadêmicos durante o curso de medicina é importante para a construção e compartilhamento de conhecimentos e habilidades fundamentais para a prática médica. O presente trabalho relata a experiência de um ano de atividades (2017-2018) de um grupo de pesquisa em epidemiologia e cardiologia. Apresentamos os principais pontos de motivação, objetivos e funcionamento do grupo, no intuito de fornecer um modelo estrutural que possa servir de inspiração e debate para a formação de outros grupos de pesquisa constituídos por estudantes de medicina ao redor do país. Ao longo de um ano foram apresentados em eventos científicos os resultados das pesquisas do grupo, além da publicação de artigos em periódicos científicos na área da saúde, totalizando 12 trabalhos acadêmicos. Como meio de fornecer uma ferramenta de avaliação quantitativa de análise das atividades do grupo, foram apresentados os resultados da autoavaliação desenvolvida pelos membros acadêmicos após um ano de atividades. Considerando o elevado número de publicações biomédicas e o aumento na exigência de conhecimentos em pesquisa e medicina baseada em evidências nos últimos anos, a formação de grupos de pesquisa apresenta-se como uma alternativa para complementação de conhecimentos teóricos e práticos para a formação médica, permitindo aos futuros profissionais uma visão crítica da produção do conhecimento científico, uma prática médica baseada em evidências, um melhor enfretamento das exigências de mercado e dos interesses econômicos na área de saúde.
