Undergraduate Research Experiences in Psychology: A National Study of Courses and Curricula

Abstract: We surveyed departments nationally to better understand the extent of scientific opportunities and experiences for undergraduate psychology students. Results showed intradepartmental variability, but overall students can expect 7 courses that offer research experiences in the typical psychology curriculum. Nonetheless, research is often not the primary course focus; some students must wait until their junior year to take such a course, and most such courses are elective, not required. We discuss implications f… Show more

“…As a disci pline, we are meeting these goals in a variety of ways but are less effective when it comes to bringing our students' work to publication (Perlman & McCann, 2005). Quality journals that judge students' work based upon their developmental level like Psi Chi Journal of Psychological Research provide excellent opportunities for faculty and students to avoid the filedrawer effect.…”

“…Allow ing students to generate research questions and design in a class means that one will likely forego approval and thus presentation of the work beyond the course as is the case with some 90% of student projects (Grahe et al, 2012;Perlman & McCann, 2005). Alternatively, an inclass generation of research questions may result in a project that will take longer than a 16-week semester and require significant future commitment from both students and faculty.…”

“…They have stated that the tool has helped them in teaching and assessing the skills of the scientific research .Moreover, it saves time and efforts .It is fast and easy to use and it can provide quality data. Perlman and McCann (2005) ,conducted a survey study to know the experience gained in the field of the scientific research among the students of psychology department in a number of educational institutions which grant bachelor degree , and offer at least one course about the scientific research. The outcomes shown that 83% of surveyed institutions have requested students to do project or senior thesis as a basic condition of graduation.…”
