Undergraduate research experience in computer science education

Abstract: Computer Science Education is gradually emerging as a valid research focus within the wider computer science community. This paper presents an account of a successful subject that offers senior undergraduates experience of research using Computer Science Education as the focus. The paper is not itself a research paper, but advocates a role for CS Ed as an undergraduate research focus and offers a case study of a successful implementation of such a programme.

“…Undergraduate research experiences have been shown to increase retention and promote critical thinking among students [12,16]. Different approaches for undergraduate research have been reported, including specially designed research courses [7,8,15], REU experiences [14], a virtual lab model [17], a model that integrated students into both small research groups and an encompassing large research group [1,6], and specially designed research programs [12]. Interdisciplinary projects have been shown to be especially beneficial for students [5,6,12].…”

“…Previous research has described structuring student research experiences as a course [19], [20], a research-based program aimed at undergraduates [21], and a framework for accommodating undergraduate students in a research group [5], [6]. Researchers have also examined methods for providing students with interdisciplinary research opportunities [8] and for increasing student communication and collaborative skills [7].…”

“…Concerning the hands-on experience, it is a well-known practice in universities all-over the world to have undergraduate CS students develop research-related projects, or at least have the senior students participate in the preparation/evaluation of CS courses [8]. Other strategies to implement the hands-on approach include the "Software Factory" [14]: an 8-semester programm simulating a real software organization where CS students put in practice their recently acquired knowledge on software engineering.…”
