Objective: This study assessed whether self-efficacy and the self-perceived competence of undergraduate dental students had been influenced by the method of teaching endodontics. Methods:Certain modules of the undergraduate endodontic programme at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA) including the tutorials, the clinical training and the assessment were revised. The self-efficacy and self-perceived competence close to graduation of an intermediate cohort of 24 students who attended all or some of the former modules or the revised modules were assessed. Additionally, the performance of students in performing root canal treatments was assessed according to predetermined criteria. Data were analysed using Cohen's Kappa, Cronbach's Alpha, Mann-Whitney and T-tests.Results: Self-efficacy and the self-perceived competence of students who followed the former modules of clinical training and assessment were similar to those of students who followed the revised modules. The revised module with higher number of tutorials increased students' self-perceived competence, but did not influence their self-efficacy statistically significantly. Not the entire number, but the number of root canal treatments performed under supervision of endodontists was related with an increase in students' self-efficacy and self-perceived competence. The performance of students in performing root canal tretaments was not statistically significantly related to their self-efficacy and self-perceived competence. Conclusion:Among the modules and their components assessed in the present study, only the number of tutorials and the number of root canal treatments performed under supervision of endodontists influenced the self-efficacy and the self-perceived competence of students.

R oot canal treatment (RCT) offers esthetical, functional, and economic benefits as well as psychological advantages to the patient by keeping the tooth within the mouth.[1] In Turkey, dentistry services are offered mainly through the private practice, government, and university hospitals. According to the data provided by Turkish Dental Association, there are 28,006 dentists actively working in Turkey as of the year of 2015, 56% of which in private institutions, 31% in institutions affiliated to the Ministry of Health, and 13% in university hospitals. Because there is no record in Turkey regarding the dentistry services provided by the private healthcare facilities, it is not possible to achieve the number of RCTs performed in those institutions. Besides that, the number of RCT performed in Objective:To obtain information about the treatment plans and the material and methods used by dentists in root canal treatments. Methods:The survey forms were e-mailed to the participants; overall, 275 volunteer participants were enrolled in the present study. The first 4 questions were related to the demographical data, the next 6 questions were related to the root canal treatment intervals and working length determination methods used by participants during the treatments, and the last 4 questions were related to the number of treatment visit and retreatment planning. The Chi Square Test was used to analyze the data at significance level of 5%.Results: It was determined that 10.5% of participants performed 1-2 root canal treatments per week. The rate of using rubber dam for saliva isolation was determined to be 16.7%, while remaining 83.3% of participants were found to prefer using cotton pellet. With respect to the institutions, the rate of use of rubber dam was found to be statistically significantly lower in public institutions. It was determined that the apex locator was the most preferred method in determining the working length. It was found that 53.1% of participants use only electronic apex locators, while 23.1% use the devices integrated to endodontic motor, and remaining 23.6% use and/or prefer both options. Conclusion:To increase the number of successful root canal treatments and make referring to the endodontist possible, it is recommended to support the educational studies the training.

Optimization and Preclinical Perception of an Artificial Simulator for Endodontic Training: A Preliminary Study

The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of ceramic, hybrid ceramic, and commercial plastic bloc root canal simulator (RCS) as preclinical training aids in the learning phase of endodontic treatments. A previously developed hydroxyapatite ceramic RCS was improved by adding epoxy resin to the ceramic matrix to more closely mimic the organic phase of dentin and to simulate the clinical situation as realistically as possible. The sintered hydroxyapatite ceramic RCS was vacuum infiltrated with epoxy resin, and the degree of infiltration was evaluated by methylene blue staining. The suitability of the resininfiltrated ceramic simulator (CR) for preclinical endodontic training was compared to that of a non-infiltrated ceramic simulator (C) and a commercial epoxy bloc (P) using a cohort of 30 dental students at one dental school in France. The study was conducted in 2016. The students' perceptions following the required exercises using the CR, C, and P were scored using a questionnaire. The learning outcomes were also assessed by examining the canal preparations that the students performed on extracted teeth using a master cone try-in test. The vacuum process resulted in a good degree of resin infiltration into the ceramic. The questionnaire showed that the C and CR groups generally reported greater satisfaction, especially for radiographic visualizations, than the P group. The CR group had a higher score than the P group for tactile sensation. There was no significant difference among the three groups with respect to the canal preparations using extracted teeth. Resin infiltration improved the performance of the ceramic RCS, especially with respect to perception during root canal instrumentation. A larger scale student training investigation and an assessment by experienced endodontists are required to validate the model.
