Underbalanced Drilling In The Reservoir, An Integrated Technology Approach

Abstract: Shell is a major player in the Global deployment of Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) technology to reduce drilling prob-lems, minimize formation damage and improve reservoir management techniques. The impetus is a recognition that most of the world's mature hydrocarbon reservoirs are in the lower end of the depletion cycle and an increasing number of horizontal wells are left with un-cemented completions. In addition, to access new untapped reserves, requires venturing into deeper water depths… Show more

“…The advantages of foam drilling over conventional mud drilling include high penetration rates, a high cuttings transport ratio, and less formation damage. For the drilling with low bottom-hole pressures, the use of a lighter fluid, such as foam, is required (Zhu et al 1995;Teichrob and Manuel 1997;Foster and Steiner 2007;Ramalho 2006;Chen 2005;Wang et al 2009b). In drilling operation, the fluid is pumped through the drill pipe down to the hole.…”

“…The expandable packer is used to isolate unwanted layers, and the water content is greatly reduced from 25% to 0.3%. In the South Furious oil field in Malaysia, the deployment of the expandable elastomer reduced the water content and began production the next day, even before the elastomer completely expanded [ 63 ]. Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technology is used to obtain higher recovery from old reservoirs that the production ability of which gradually reduced or new reservoirs difficult to access.…”
