Building a Self‐Adaptive Protective Layer on Ni‐Rich Layered Cathodes to Enhance the Cycle Stability of Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Layered Ni‐rich lithium transition metal oxides are promising battery cathodes due to their high specific capacity, but their poor cycling stability due to intergranular cracks in secondary particles restricts their practical applications. Surface engineering is an effective strategy for improving a cathode's cycling stability, but most reported surface coatings cannot adapt to the dynamic volume changes of cathodes. Herein, a self‐adaptive polymer (polyrotaxane‐co‐poly(acrylic acid)) interfacial layer is built on LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2. The polymer layer with a slide‐ring structure exhibits high toughness and can withstand the stress caused by particle volume changes, which can prevent the cracking of particles. In addition, the slide‐ring polymer acts as a physicochemical barrier that suppresses surface side reactions and alleviates the dissolution of transition metallic ions, which ensures stable cycling performance. Thus, the as‐prepared cathode shows significantly improved long‐term cycling stability in situations in which cracks may easily occur, especially under high‐rate, high‐voltage, and high‐temperature conditions.

Solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is considered as an effective way to suppress Li dendrite. However, most of the constructed SEI films are usually nonuniform and incompact due to the uncertain interface between Li and electrolyte, finally resulting in failure to Li anode protection. To overcome such disadvantage, a stable pristine SEI film is formed successfully by self‐diffusion and assembly when the surface reaction occur between the molten Li and the substrate, benefitting from the ultra‐high chemical activity, atomic level smoothness, and flowability of liquid lithium. It is an inside–outside process via the obtained Li composites migrating from reaction interface to the Li liquid metal surface. Then, the obtained SEI can lead to a stable and long‐lifespan Li integrated electrode, showing the self‐diffusion/assembly strategy upon liquid Li‐metal is a promising way for practical dendrite‐free anode.

Background: This study used receiver operating characteristic curve to analyze Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) for glassy cell carcinoma data to identify predictive models and potential disparities in outcome. Materials and Methods: This study analyzed socio-economic, staging and treatment factors. For risk modeling, each factor was fitted by a generalized linear model to predict the cause specific survival. Area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (ROCs) were computed. Similar strata were combined to construct the most parsimonious models. A random sampling algorithm was used to estimate modeling errors. Risk of glassy cell carcinoma death was computed for the predictors for comparison. Results: There were 79 patients included in this study. The mean follow up time (S.D.) was 37 (32.8) months. Female patients outnumbered males 4:1. The mean (S.D.) age was 54.4 (19.8) years. SEER stage was the most predictive factor of outcome (ROC area of 0.69). The risks of cause specific death were, respectively, 9.4% for localized, 16.7% for regional, 35% for the un-staged/others category, and 60% for distant disease. After optimization, separation between the regional and unstaged/others category was removed with a higher ROC area of 0.72. Several socio-economic factors had small but measurable effects on outcome. Radiotherapy had not been used in 90% of patients with regional disease. Conclusions: Optimized SEER stage was predictive and useful in treatment selection. Underuse of radiotherapy may have contributed to poor outcome.
