The determination of land cover changes (LCCs) and their association to biophysical and socioeconomic factors is vital to support government policies toward the sustainable use of natural resources. The present study aimed to quantify deforestation, forest recovery and net cover change in tropical dry forests (TDFs) in Brazil from 2007 to 2016, and investigate how they are associated to biophysical and socioeconomic factors. We also assessed the effects of LCC variables in human welfare indicators. For this purpose, we used MODIS imagery to calculate TDF gross loss (deforestation), gross gain (forest recovery) and net cover change (the balance between deforestation and forest recovery) for 294 counties in three Brazilian states (Minas Gerais, Bahia, and Piauí). We obtained seven factors potentially associated to LCC at the county level: total county area, road density, humidity index, slope, elevation, and % change in human population and in cattle density. From 2007 to 2016, TDF cover increased from 76,693 to 80,964 km2 (+5.6%). This positive net change resulted from a remarkable forest recovery of 19,018 km2 (24.8%), offsetting a large deforested area (14,748 km2; 19.2%). Practically all these cover changes were a consequence of transitions from TDF to pastures and vice-versa, highlighting the importance of developing sustainable policies for cattle raising in TDF regions. Each LCC variable was associated to different set of factors, but two biophysical variables were significantly associated both to TDF area gained and lost per county: county area (positively) and slope (negatively), indicating that large and flat counties have very dynamic LCCs. The TDF net area change was only associated (negatively) to the humidity index, reflecting an increase in TDF cover in more arid counties. The net increase in Brazilian TDF area is likely a result from an interplay of biophysical and socioeconomic factors that reduced deforestation and caused pasture abandonment. Although the ecological integrity and permanence of secondary TDFs need further investigation, the recovery of this semi-arid ecosystem must be valued and accounted for in the national forest restoration programs, as it would significantly help achieving the goals established in the Bonn agreement and the Atlantic Rain Forest pact.

Forests provide invaluable ecosystem services, including critical services such as climate regulation. Increasing rates of deforestation in Brazil, home of some of the world's largest and most ecologically diverse tropical forests, poses several threats to businesses; companies face the challenge of intensified physical risks, stringent regulations, and pressure from investors and consumers demanding low‐carbon investment and product practices. This study investigated a sample of 232 listed Brazilian companies to understand their awareness of the forest agenda and commitment to forest protection. Although most companies are aware of forest‐related issues, risk management and impact monitoring are lacking. This analysis provides qualitative insights into listed Brazilian companies' perceptions of forest‐related issues, demonstrating the need to raise risk awareness and increase engagement. The study findings suggest that regulatory measures can leverage corporate disclosure of forest engagement, encouraging risk reduction and maximizing opportunities aligned with the climate agenda.

Large wood plays a critical role providing complex habitat structure in rivers and streams. The instream wood regime consists of wood recruitment, transport, retention, and decay in river corridors. In tropical streams, transport and decay are thought to be the dominant influences on the amount of instream wood stored, and these are driven by upstream forest cover, as well as catchment hydroclimatic and geomorphic characteristics. Lack of studies of the tropical wood regime leave many uncertainties. Notably, the wood regimes in the neotropical Amazon and Cerrado biomes are not known, and rapidly changing land use threatens efforts to understand their natural wood regime. We investigated predictors of instream wood in catchments of the Amazon and Cerrado subject to a wide range of agricultural land use to identify the critical factors controlling wood recruitment and load. Using the structural equation modelling technique, we disentangled the complex net of regional and local controls. Contrary to our expectations, local drivers—such as the relation between the piece size and channel dimensions, discharge, stream power, and riparian forest—were the most important predictors of instream wood. The amounts of wood found in these streams were primarily the result of the wood delivered by the local riparian forest and how much of that wood remains trapped. Therefore, the preservation of the forested riparian zones in Amazon and Cerrado streams is crucial for maintaining the sources of wood as well as the channel morphology capable of trapping and retaining instream wood. Further research should compare reference and disturbed streams to quantify the influence of anthropogenic activities on instream wood and its primary influences. This information would facilitate assessing the extent of human alteration and developing mitigating measures to arrest or reverse changes that reduce instream wood and degrade aquatic and riparian habitat in neotropical rivers and streams.
