ResumenEl presente estudio analiza un conjunto de retratos del Renacimiento en los que figura inscrito en el lienzo un epigrama. El examen de una gavilla de composiciones breves permite indagar en varios de los aspectos más complejos de las relaciones entre texto e imagen en la Edad del Humanismo así como en la intensificación de la función panegí-rica de algunos retratos oficiales. El estudio de la compleja relación que la poesía mantuvo con el arte de la pintura durante los albores de la Edad Moderna se ha centrado casi siempre en el análisis de los valores propiamente literarios, orillando una indagación algo más ceñida al entorno visivo. Podría servir como ejemplo de esa ligera descompensación la tipología que una brillante estudiosa italiana esbozara sobre el retrato y sus diferentes encarnaciones poéticas, distinguiendo una organización posible en tres sectores: 1) el retrato como objeto, 2) el retrato interior y 3) el retrato en palabras

Si bien esta sugestiva clasificación ternaria atiende a varias conexiones capitales de la poesía con el género pictórico, presenta, sin embargo, una ausencia significativa: la posibilidad de que una composición poética aparezca engastada, inscrita dentro de un retrato real.Desde el campo de las relaciones inter-artísticas, parece obligado apuntar cómo una suerte de movimiento en dos direcciones rige el vínculo existente entre la literatura y las artes visuales. Por ello, de la misma forma que la pintura llegó a irrumpir con pujanza en el ámbito de la poesía y de ese modo dio lugar a centenares de composiciones de tema retratístico a lo largo y ancho de la Europa renacentista, también los versos consiguieron hacerse -literalmente-un hueco en el espacio material y restringido del cuadro. Partiendo de tan afortunada circunstancia, uno de los elementos más sugestivos de la confluencia entre imagen y texto surge cuando la obra plástica integra en sí un documento escrito, cuya naturaleza y extensión puede ser muy variada, ya se trate de un lema o motto, de una filacteria que reproduce una frase célebre, de un poema breve o un libro abierto en el que puede leerse con claridad alguna de sus páginas… 3 . A continuación llevaremos a cabo algunas consideraciones en torno a un pequeño conjunto de retratos renacentistas en los que figura -a modo de inscripción tutelar-un epigrama. En el examen de dichas composiciones atenderemos a la función de elogio que revisten los versos, intensificando el aspecto celebrativo de algunos retratos oficiales, acercando así el contexto de producción 2. Por «retrato como objeto» entiende Federica Pich (2007) aquel poema que se refiere a un retrato concebido como un objeto concreto (ya sea éste pintado, grabado, esculpido…) y que puede ser real también fuera de la evocación literaria. La segunda serie, la del «retrato interior», haría referencia a aquellos textos que hablan de un retrato imaginado, pensado, mental o soñado, concebido pues en la fantasía del yo lírico o del galán enamorado.
