Unconstrained N=2 matter, Yang-Mills and supergravity theories in harmonic superspace

Abstract: A new approach to N = 2 supersymmetry based on the concept of harmonic superspace is proposed and is used to give an unconstrained superfield geometric description of N = 2 super Yang-Mills and supergravity theories as well as of matter N = 2 hypermultiplets. The harmonic N = 2 superspace has as independent coordinates, in addition to the usual ones, the isospinor harmonics u : on the sphere SU(2)/U(l). The role of u : is to relate the SU(2) group realised on the component fields to a U ( l ) group acting on t… Show more

“…To this end, we introduce a set of auxiliary commuting variables u +a A (called "harmonic variables" [54]). Apart from the SU(4) index A, they carry an index a = 1, 2 and charge '+' of the "little group" U(2) ⊂ SU (4).…”

“…Its off-shell version, employing SU (2) harmonic variables for the first time, was given in [54]. The same ideas made it possible to formulate the N = 3 SYM theory off shell, this time using SU (3) harmonics [56].…”

“…Ten years ago, it was advocated in [14] that the harmonic [10,11] and projective [7,8] superspace approaches provide complementary descriptions of rigid N = 2 supersymmetric theories. This also appears to hold at the level of N = 2 supergravity.…”

“…The superconformal algebra in five dimensions includes 5D simple (or N = 1) supersymmetry algebra 1 as its super Poincaré subalgebra. As is well-known, for supersymmetric theories in various dimensions with eight supercharges (including the three important cases: (i) 4D N = 2, (ii) 5D N = 1 and (iii) 6D N = (1, 0)) a powerful formalism to generate off-shell formulations is the harmonic superspace approach that was originally developed for the 4D N = 2 supersymmertic Yang-Mills theories and supergravity [5,6]. There also exists a somewhat different, but related, formalismthe so-called projective superspace approach [7,8,9,10], first introduced soon after the harmonic superspace had appeared.…”
