“…Piller & Mansour 1990, Piller 1994Piller & Mansour 1994). The reefs near Hurghada (Egypt), northern Red Sea, have been studied in the course of a series ofexpeditions (Beltagy 1976;Beltagy 1984;Moussa et al 1991;Riegel & Velimirov 1994). Patch reefs, fringing reefs and less-developed barrier reefs characterize the area in front of Hurghada.…”

“…Raised fossil reefs exist on the shore and result from tectonic uplift and changes of relative sea level; it is likely they were fringing reefs at different times in the past 120,000 years (Behairy et al 1992). Previous studies of the Hurghada region dealt with bottom topography and coral formations (Badr and Crossland, 1939;Crossland, 1939), bottom and reefal sediments (Shukri, 1953;E1 Sayed, 1984;Moussa et al 1991), and carbonate mineralogy on reef-building corals (El Wakeel et al 1984).…”

“…The variation in the width is shown to be strongly related to morphological changes in the early development of this coastal zone. The fluvial sediment discharged from surrounded mountains might have had an effect on the early morphology of the reef formations (Moussa et al 1991). The tide is semidiurnal having a maximum peak every 12 h with a mean tidal range of about 0.8 m. The water salinity is relatively high; the average salinity near the coast is 41% and is 40% in the deeper water.…”
