Although there are numerous articles and books about postpartum depression, few are psychoanalytically informed, and the psychodynamics of women suffering from postpartum depression are overlooked in most of these publications. Psychoanalytic reports concerning postpartum depression are few, but clinical experience and the literature suggest that a triad of three common, specific emotional conflicts is typical of many women who develop postpartum depression. For simplicity, these are dependency conflicts, anger conflicts, and motherhood conflicts. The dependency conflicts typically have a counterdependent form, the conflicts over anger characteristically include a great deal of guilt and inhibition, and there are often problematic identifications with the woman's own mother (and father) with associated conflicts about motherhood. The frequent counterdependent attitude tends to limit participation in extensive psychotherapy, contributing to the paucity of psychoanalytic contributions on this subject.

On Hull, Lane, and Gibbons's "Early Object Loss and 'Secret Anniversaries of the Heart' " Hull, Lane, and Gibbons (1993) observe that an early object loss may be revived in the transference when the duration of the treatment matches the patient's age when the loss occurred. This commentary relates their work to several publications that they do not cite.James W. Hull, Robert C. Lane, and Beverly Gibbons (1993) describe a significant clinical phenomenon in their article, "Early Object Loss and 'Secret Anniversaries of the Heart.' " I would like to agree with their observations and conclusions and to amplify and extend them with some related material that the authors do not cite. They postulate that an early object loss may be revived in the transference when the duration of the treatment matches the patient's age when the loss occurred. Both of their case examples involve the early loss of the patient's mother. The birth of a sibling is a common event that includes the temporary loss of mother when she goes to the hospital for childbirth, followed by permanently having to share mother (and father) with the newcomer. It sometimes includes the further emotional loss created by postpartum depression in the mother. The following two cases from the literature thus illustrate the phenomenon that Hull et al. describe. Morris (1983) had a patient who suddenly wanted to end her analysis after 3 years and 2 months; at the same time, she referred a woman friend of hers to him, assuming he would prefer the friend to her.
