Uncompensated antiferromagnetic spins at the interface in Mn–Ir based exchange biased bilayers

Abstract: The microscopic origin of the uncompensated antiferromagnetic (AFM) spins was investigated by means of the x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectroscopy with transmission mode for Mn–Ir/ferromagnetic (FM) bilayers. As the AFM layer thickness increases, resonant absorption magnitude of Mn L edge naturally increases, but the XMCD magnitude does not change so much. When the FM layer material is modified, the XMCD signal of Mn L edge drastically changes not only in its magnitude but also in its sign. The X… Show more

“…The Mn XAS and XMCD display a lineshape similar to the spectra previously reported in similarly patterned 18 and unpatterned bilayer IrMn films. 17 As expected from the reversed contrast of the Fe and Mn XPEEM images in Fig. 1, we find that the sign of the Mn XMCD spectra is opposite with respect to Fe ͑inset of Fig.…”

“…This AFM coupling is unusual 16 and has been shown to depend on material parameters in IrMn-based systems. 17 In our case, we note that AFM coupling is also observed in structures with uniform magnetization and multiple domain states.…”

“…What possible factors then remain? Recent studies have pointed out the AF net moment remaining in the interface and the possibility of special conditions for the specific F/AF system [15], and direct observations have also been reported [16,17]. Progress in these approaches is highly desirable.…”

“…It is attributed that the interfacial Mn spins are polarized due to the exchange coupling with the ferromagnetic Co 70 Fe 30 alloy. 75) Therefore, the uncompensated Mn spins detected by XMCD is very important to solve the origin of the exchange bias effect.…”
