RESUMENObjetivo: Determinar la relación entre las características sociodemográficas (SD) y el nivel de incertidumbre (NI) del adulto mayor (AM) con diagnóstico de cáncer. Material y método: Estudio cuantitativo, transversal, correlacional con una muestra no probabilística, de personas mayores de 60 años con diagnóstico de cáncer hospedadas en la Corporación Nacional del Cáncer (CONAC), Región de Valparaíso, Chile, por un período de 6 semanas. Para la recolección de datos se utilizó Escala de Evaluación de la Incertidumbre de Merle Mishel. Para el análisis estadístico descriptivo se utilizaron medidas de tendencia central y para el análisis de correlación se utilizaron los métodos de correlación de Pearson, análisis de varianza ANOVA y modelo de regresión lineal. Resultados: 54.8% de los adultos mayores presentan un alto NI. La escolaridad está correlacionada negativamente con el NI (R=0.54, p-valor=0.0492). Un 28.99% (R 2 ajustado, 35gl) de la varianza en el NI se explica por la escolaridad. No se encontró una correlación estadísticamente significativa con las otras características SD. Conclusión: Se confirma que la escolaridad está correlacionada con el NI, además se determina un modelo de regresión lineal que permite predecir el NI, basado en las características de escolaridad de los adultos mayores hospedados en CONAC.Palabras clave: Neoplasias, incertidumbre, anciano, enfermería oncológica. ABSTRACTObjective: To determine the relationship between the level of uncertainty and the sociodemographic characteristics in elderly diagnosed with cancer. Material and methods: Quantitative, cross-sectional correlational study, with a non-probabilistic sample of 60 elderly diagnosed with cancer. The study was conducted at the National Cancer Corporation, Region of Valparaíso, Chile for a period of 6 weeks. In order to collect the data the Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale (MUIS) was used. For the descriptive statistical analysis we used mean and central tendency measures and for the correlation analysis we used Pearson correlation, the ANOVA test and a lineal regression model. Results: 54.8% of elderly show a high uncertainty level. Educational level is negatively correlated with uncertainty (R=0.54, p-value=0.0492). 28.99% (adjusted R 2 , 35DF) of variation in uncertainty is explained as related to educational level. We did not find a significant correlation with other sociodemographic characteristics. Conclusion: It was confirmed that educational level is correlated with uncertainty level; a linear model to predict uncertainty level based on the educational level of elderly hosted by CONAC is also proposed.
