The definition of performance limit states for progressive collapse design and assessment of civil structures is an open issue and deserves special attention in view of future building codes and standards. In this study, the main findings of a multilevel sensitivity analysis are presented to characterize the progressive collapse capacity of a selected class of modern European buildings having a reinforced concrete framed structure. After that a group of capacity model properties are assumed as random variables on the basis of earlier studies, the sensitivity of both ultimate load capacity and corresponding maximum and residual drifts to the ultimate steel strain and location of column-removal scenario is assessed. Then, the influence of the capacity model properties on maximum drift demand corresponding to a codecompliant design gravity load is evaluated. Finally, five performance limit states associated with increasing levels of damage are introduced and the corresponding load capacity is quantified under varying capacity model properties. Analysis results indicate a high sensitivity to the ultimate steel strain, column location in plan, beam span and yield steel strength. As a connecting component in structures, the mechanical property of joint is one of the critical factors, especially to prevent progressive collapse. In the scenario of column loss, the joints are subjected to bending moment combined with tension to redistribute loads, which is different from the behavior of joint in an undamaged structure. According to this specific loading condition, two concrete-filled steel tubular column-steel beam joints under bending moment combined with tensile force were tested. In the test, a new kind of semi-rigid joint was proposed, whilst an outer-ring configuration was adopted in a rigid joint for comparison. Meanwhile a finite element model of the new joint was developed by using ABAQUS. The results show that new semi-rigid joint possesses good rotation capacity under pure bending moment. The initial stiffness and moment resistance of the new joint are both smaller than those of the outer-ring joint. The moment-tension relationship of new joint keeps linear. The behavior of joint under moment combined with tensile force may be uniformly described by a power function correlation expression. The influence of width of short-limb connected to tube wall and the limb thickness on the initial stiffness and strength of new joint is obvious whilst the influence of width of long-limb connected to beam flange is not evident.

SummarySteel bracing is able to improve progressive collapse resistance of reinforced concrete (RC) frames, but the bracing design is typically based on seismic retrofitting or lateral stability. There is no approach for design of steel bracing against progressive collapse. To this end, a retrofitting approach with steel braces is proposed based on analysis of macro finite element (FE) models with fiber beam elements. The FE models were initially validated through the experimental results of a braced frame and then used to investigate the effects of pertinent parameters on the progressive collapse resistance of planar frames. The results suggest the braces should be placed at the top story. Thereafter, macro FE models are built to investigate the dynamic responses of the three‐dimensional prototype RC frames under different column removal scenarios (CRS) and show the necessity of retrofitting. Accordingly, the design approach of steel bracing is proposed with incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) and assuming independent contribution of braces and frames to resistance. Finally, the fragility analysis of the frames under a corner‐penultimate‐exterior CRS is conducted through IDA and Monte Carlo simulation, and the results confirm the validity of the proposed design approach for retrofitting RC frames.
