Uncertainty and Relative Risks of Radiation Exposure

Abstract: Exposure to ionizing radiation in a nonmilitary emergency is likely to alarm those persons exposed and their families. Not only is the outcome uncertain, but the risks are difficult to convey. This communication discusses uncertainties in short-term outcome and long-term effects, as well as means of conveying the magnitude of risks to patients and their families. It emphasizes that the perception of radiation hazards is contextual. It offers three ways of presenting the prognostic long-term risks of accidental… Show more

“…This has been found by other authors (42). It should be noted the long term effects of low dose radiation are uncertain (43). The exposure in our study was greater to the hands, than eyes of our interventionalists, which may argue for even the use of leaded gloves in addition to leaded glasses.…”

“…However, the absolute exposure to orthopedic surgeons must be calculated on an individual basis, taking into account that radiation exposure is cumulative over a lifetime. At present, the long-term effects of low-dose radiation remain unknown [ 17 ].…”

“…However, if the tube current is set too high to achieve better quality images, the entire advantage of pulsed operation is defeated and there may be no actual dose savings (26). Others also have shown to reduce overall exposure by 20% to 75% during pulsed fluoroscopy (48,49).…”
