Uncertainties of exposure‐related quantities in mammographic x‐ray unit quality control

Abstract: Breast screening programs operate in many countries with mammographic x-ray units subject to stringent quality control tests. These tests include the evaluation of quantities based on exposure measurements, such as half value layer, automatic exposure control reproducibility, average glandular dose, and radiation output rate. There are numerous error sources that contribute to the uncertainty of these exposure-related quantities, some of which are unique to the low energy x-ray spectrum produced by mammographi… Show more

“…Type B evaluations use professional judgment or other nonstatistical information to determine values for u and v. The details of this uncertainty analysis methodology are explained more fully in the context of a medical physics application 27 and in a study regarding quality assurance measurements in mammography. 28 If the uncertainty components are not correlated, 26,27 the combined standard uncertainty, u comb , and effective degrees of freedom, v eff , for N uncertainty components, are given by…”
