Unambiguous Identification of Volatile Organic Compounds by Proton-Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometry Coupled with GC/MS

Abstract: Interest in on-line measurements of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is increasing, as sensitive, compact, and affordable direct inlet mass spectrometers are becoming available. Proton-transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) distinguishes itself by its high sensitivity (low ppt range), high time resolution (200 ms), little ionization-induced fragmentation, and ionization efficiency independent of the compound to be analyzed. Yet, PTR-MS has a shortcoming. It is a one-dimensional technique that characteri… Show more

“…Those include coupling of GC with real-time detection techniques, such as PTR-MS 248 or the direct coupling of fast extraction techniques to the analytical instrument, leading to high time-resolution. 249 Such fast extraction techniques include the use of supercritical CO2, which is chemically inert, has a low toxicity, and is available in high purity.…”

“…Gas analysis is also becoming an important tool in control of industrial processes such as combustion and plasma diagnostics, investigation of engines or automobile exhaust measurements or headspace analysis during food production (Werle 2003, Lindinger 2005, Jobson 2005. Several publications have shown the diagnostic potential of relatively new, advanced techniques.…”
