Show more

“…At Platanes we find C. virgata at the beginning of the Middle Neolithic (we are probably missing older Neolithic deposits) and its population considerably increases from the Bronze Age to reach its maximum in the Roman and Post-Roman periods (zone PL VI). These data confirm and clarify the regional evolution already described (Magnin and Martin, 2012;Martin, 2004;Martin et al, 2005;Moreau et al, 2017;Romey et al, 2015). The dynamics of Oxychilus hydatinus can be compared to that of C. virgata although its arrival can sometimes be delayed.…”

“…Local evidence is more numerous for the Middle Neolithic. Several extensive outdoor sites have been unearthed in recent years around Aix (D'Anna and Sauzade, 2014;Moreau et al, 2017). The Late Neolithic corresponds with a demographic boom that continued and amplified during the final phases of the Neolithic and Protohistory.…”

“…Cazan-Le clos du Moulin, near Vernègues, is a middle Neolithic site in the south of France and is the first village of the Chassey culture identified in the area (Moreau et al 2017). On this site, archaeological floors were not preserved and charcoal was only found trapped in hollow features.…”

“…While the hearths provided charcoal concentrations possibly formed through a limited number of fires over a short period of time, the well may represent a longterm deposit as it was used throughout the occupation of the site, which lasted around three centuries. Moreover, the seven studied heated-stone hearths were not all in use at the same time and they also cover most of the time-span of the Neolithic occupation, as indicated by the 14 C dates and to other evidences (Moreau et al 2017).…”
