The need for a multidisciplinary approach for characterizing water bodies in terms of morphological, chemical and ecological quality has hastened the growth of hydromorphology as a cross-disciplinary topic at the interface of hydrology, geomorphology and ecology. Many authors have analysed how hydroecology may affect freshwater biodiversity, although little is known about how this biodiversity might be affected by river morphological quality. We examined how well the presence of the semi-aquatic Eurasian otter can be predicted by the rivers' morphological quality and its adjustments over the last decades. We tested the morphological quality index (MQI) methodology in 38 reaches of five rivers in southern Italy, 23 of which were positive to otter presence. In each reach, we examined 28 indicators contributing to the MQI and its 11 sub-indices. The results showed a significant relationship between the probability of the presence of otters, MQI, and some sub-indices. The best performing sub-indices were related to channel adjustments and the continuity of river processes. A more detailed analysis of channel adjustments showed a detrimental effect of channel incision (>3 m) and a positive effect of narrowing, particularly where it occurred simultaneously with the development of forest in the new floodplain. The continuity of river processes has driven the migration of river banks and the development of ponds and secondary channels, likely increasing the availability of dens and resting sites and the hunting capabilities of otters. Our results stressed the importance of fluvial dynamics and sustainable adaptive river management for the habitat quality of semi-aquatic species. Figure 1. The Water Framework Directive commits European Union member states to achieve good ecological and chemical status of all water bodies. As hydromorphology is a key factor for ecological status, a consortium of 26 partners from 15 countries studied the role of hydromorphological pressures and measures in the REFORM project. Its main objective was to answer the question: How to make river restoration successful? The project developed guidance for this by structuring the information along the different stages of restoration projects and river basin management plans, posing a logical sequence of questions: How does my river work? What’s wrong? How to improve? Things can be wrong for ecological status as a result of morphological alterations. These alterations form pressures that can be countered or mitigated by measures that improve sedimentological and morphological features. We present two specific results of REFORM that focus on river morphology. First, we provide an overview of methods to assess morphological quality and diagnose alteration. Second, we present systematic cause–effect relationships for restoration measures.

The existing high alluvial risk Basin Lluta “Chile,” due to the presence of large mountains subject to inclement weather, coupled with the growing urban pressure to use sectors downstream increasingly exposed to this type of event, justify studies of the behavior of debris flows and the ability to mitigate its effects by the construction of protection and control. For this purpose, made the hidrogeomorfológica map for this basin. The surface of this basin is 3447 km2 and is in a desert area. It is characterized by low rainfall and therefore all its soils are devoid of vegetation except for the low part of the valley where the land use is agricultural. The natural regime has permanent basin runoff to the sea all year round with an average flow of 0.45–1.44 m3seg. The impact has increased the flow, but homogeneity is not presented with the full extent of the basin, showing notable spatial differences in the level of danger she originates. Different from what was described flood of 2001, which was reflected in the lower basin Lluta where road infrastructure was badly damaged by the effects of scouring and landslides, resulting in this reconstruction of road and railway bridges, implying a strong investment in works of river bank protection upstream of the bridges.
