Umbilico‐biliary fistula in a dog

Abstract: This case report describes a previously unreported congenital malformation, an umbilico-billary fistula, in a dog. A one-year-old male bulldog was diagnosed with umbilico-billary fistula using fistulography. Treatment involving surgical removal of the fistula was straightforward and resulted in clinical resolution of the problem.

“…Fistulography was useful to evaluate anomalies in relation to the rest of the hepatic tree and to assist in the decision to perform surgical correction. This strategy was similar to that previously reported ( Sides et al, 2004 ). Computed tomographic cholangiography would provide more detailed information ( Kelly et al, 2019 ; Sato et al, 2018 ); however, it was not performed for economic reasons.…”

“…Regardless, the surgical approach was expected to be straightforward, resulting in the correction of a persistent biliary discharge that could lead to an ascending liver infection. In this case, the fistula extended from the umbilical orifice to the common hepatic duct, and in the previous case, the communication was with the right hepatic duct ( Sides et al, 2004 ).…”

“…A case of an umbilicobiliary fistula (considered to be a congenital condition) has also been reported in a dog 7. Information about the aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of cholecystocutaneous fistulae in dogs is therefore limited.…”

“…To the authors’ knowledge, only three reports of spontaneous cholecystocutaneous fistulae have been described in the veterinary literature,4 5 and only one was associated with cholecystolithiasis 6. A case of an umbilicobiliary fistula (considered to be a congenital condition) has also been reported in a dog 7. Information about the aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of cholecystocutaneous fistulae in dogs is therefore limited.…”
