Umbilical Cord Blood Transplantation: Connecting Its Origin to Its Future

Abstract: Transplantation of umbilical cord blood (UCB) is an attractive alternative source of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). The unique properties of cord blood and its distinct immune tolerance and engraftment kinetics compared to bone marrow (BM) and peripheral blood progenitor cells, permit a wider disparity in human leukocyte antigen levels between a cord blood donor and recipient after an unrelated umbilical cord blood transplant (UCBT). In addition, it is readily available and has a lowered risk of graft-versus… Show more

“…Table (1): displays socio-demographic characteristics of the studied pregnant women. As regard to women's age, it was observed that more than half (58.1%) of the studied women their age was (25 to 35) and slightly less than one third (30.7%) their age was 15 and less than <25.…”

“…Today, one of the main sources of hematopoietic stem cells is cord blood. The placenta and umbilical cord of newborn infants contain umbilical cord blood, commonly known as cord blood (1) . The umbilical cord is the cord that connects the baby to the placenta.…”

“…Although this procedure is crucial to determine whether the filtration was efficient, or not, in minimizing the concentration of immunological cells in the RBC used for allogeneic applications, since these cells can induce graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) [18]. UCB lymphocytes were of the naïve type and led to low GvHD levels [19].…”

“…When sourcing HSC and HPC from UCB, grafts potentially benefit from inherent tissue primitiveness. As such, GVHD-contributing populations are rare, providing an important option that can partially circumvent such a transplant-related complication ( Sanchez-Petitto et al, 2023 ). For instance, incidence of chronic GVHD was seen to be significantly lower when UCB cells (5.8%) are used compared to mPB (10.1% - mismatched unrelated donor and 11.5% matched unrelated donor) in the therapeutic context of acute myeloid leukemia ( Malard et al, 2015 ).…”
